Hi all, this is my first kick at starting a project like this! So after reading just about all I can from everyone else's experiences, documentation and feedback, I think i have learned just enough to be dangerous! I am very impressed with the level of support, information and trouble that people have gone to to list every step, part and snag along the way during their projects. I hope I can only learn and take your experiences to navigate this minefield I may be creating for myself!

I bought my 1985 FJ60 back about 4 years ago out of The Dalles, OR for not much. It was my 3rd cruiser I had owned. It was in really rough shape mechanically, but the body was in very nice shape with only 2 small spots of rust. I imported it into Canada and began going through it to repair, replace or improve it to get it past the safety. After the safety and I got it registered, I put a 2-1/2 lift on it (I still haven't figured out a name yet!!). The PO had tried to de-smog it and it ran like crap. I tried to fix it up with as much info as i could pull off mud, but it didn't really help. I was able to locate and plug about 5 major vacuum leaks so at least it idles better.

I was in the process of debating whether to rip out the 2F and put a SBC in, or find a diesel and a 5 speed, but didn't really want to take out a second mortgage to do that. When totally out of the blue, a friend of a friend called me and asked me if I wanted his 88 FJ62 for parts. His son had spun a bearing on the highway and the engine was toast, well at least the bottom part! It had good tires that were bigger and better than mine, it had a really nice interior, it had a OME lift and it had a 3FE!

He only wanted $1000 complete and I figured that with what I could pull off of it, to convert mine to a 2FE, plus all the other stuff that was good I could sell or use, I couldn't ask for a better situation.

So here I sit with 2 cruisers, mine running like crap, all the spare parts one could ask for to do this conversion, and not a lot of money into both of them! My wife even told me to go buy it to help me get through my mid-life crisis, because cruisers were cheaper than girls in their mid-20's and I didn't have to go through all the training again!

Here is what they look like:

I'm sure this will take me a bit longer than I want it to because I also run my own company designing, selling and installing automated lubrication systems on large industrial applications. It keeps me out on the road a lot. But I really want this to be completed so I can use it this summer.

I've already started picking the brains of Curtis (RocDoc) and he has been invaluable. I hope there are others that will guide me right! Thanks in advance.

I think this is going to be a lot of fun for you Dean. :) Did you get my message about headwork?

Yes I did, sorry I haven't gotten back to you on that... I leave on Sunday for Mexico to do a tour of about 6 sugar mills, 3 steel mills and a cement plant with a couple of guys from a chain manufacturer so I've been up to my a$$ in alligators! I haven't had a chance to think about it. I know it would probably run better, but how much time would that take you? I don't know what kind of shape my 3FE head is in and don't want to take yours then find out mine is toast. I think I will just keep everything stock because it is only a toy, only driven on the odd weekend when I actually get to go off-roading!

Thanks for the offer though. I just want it to run better than it did on Ruby-Con!!!

No worries, just wanted to make sure you got it. As for time, I'm sure it wouldn't amount to more than offsetting some spare parts pilfering :hillbilly: It would go much faster than it did for the first kick at the can. But it would only make sense if you want to at least give it a valve job before it goes in, as I can't guaranttee I wouldn't knick a seat.

Okay, after my trip to Mexico to tour sugar mills and a couple of steel mills, getting over the Mexican Weight Watcher's and a few other trips for work, I had a chance to tear into the 62. I documented as much as possible with pictures, tons of them from every angle. I haven't got the head off yet as the deck build has now gotten in the way.

I will post some of the pictures, but many of you already know what a 3FE looks like! If anyone needs anything specifically posted for what you are doing this is a complete, stock and (was) running 3FE. Let me know.

Dean.

WooHoo! Another 2FE. Join the brotherhood.

Since you will be able to keep your 2F accessories this will be an easy swap. Splicing into your FJ60 wiring will probably require some creativity, but it shouldn't be too hard. Just try to keep the efi harness as stand alone as possible.

I feel honored to have all you guys monitoring! Curtis and I have wheeled together and he has been a big inspiration to move forward with this. I think I have read your manual front to back about 8 times Pappy! Every time. I go and work on the donor truck, I come back in and have another read. I don't think I would have attempted this without all the effort you put into that. Thanks.

In my dreams where I have a bit of spare time and spare change, I'm building a 2FE to put into a clean 60:D
Tuning in!

Da nada. Now get to work.

Okay, I got the spend a few hours playing on the parts truck this past week because the weather co-operated and I got my chores done early!

I have it stripped down to just needing to take the head and intake / exhaust manifolds off. I plan on using the stock location for my accessories (PS, Alt, de-vaned air pump). If I can get to it this week, I'm curious to see what the condition of the valves and everything is and whether or not I have to send it in to be re-done. The wiring harness is loose, just have to get my 8 yr old to get his small hands into undo the one O2 sensor for the inside exhaust pipe.

Everything came apart with no issues and I didn't break anything so I am very happy! Why are the motors put in at such an angle ??

If you pull the panel that the transfer lever passes through, you can likely get the O2 connector from down through the tranny hump.

And when you redo the exhaust, mount those two suckers where you can get to them. Both of mine are right off the manifold.

Thanks Curtis, I will look into that even if it means emptying my parts barn! Thanks Pappy, I had read in your manual about that one too, but had not though about putting them up that high, probably because it makes sense! I have to redo the whole exhaust anyways so may as well make it my way.

I would say mine are about 12" below the flange. Maybe a little more, but very accessible.

So did you guys use the 3FE split exhaust manifold or a 2F header then make up the rest of the piping from there? I can see the 3FE flowing better, but it will be a bigger pain and more expense to get the piping all done.

Here is a pic of my exhaust. Keep in mind it goes into an FJ40. Flanges and head pipe were from the FJ62. The rest was built by a muffler shop. The Ox sensor flanges were removed from the FJ62 exhaust pipes and welded into their new locations.

Mine is split back to a dual in, single out muffler. O2 sensors are near stock location, but both pipes are tucked inside the framerail. If you have a header, you could play with it and see if you can make it work, but plan to use the manifolds as a back up.

Okay, I finally got a chance to pull the head off of the 3FE and everything looks really good. The cylinders look to be in nice shape, although a little too shinny and smooth for my likeing. When I rotated the front pulley so I could have a good look at them all, the number 1 piston stayed right where it was, right at the top of the cylinder. I guess the guy I bought it from really did have horseshoes up his a$$!

He told me that something went wrong with the engine while he was on the highway doing about 65 (108 kmh). I haven't gotten into the bottom end because I don't really care about it as I bought it for just the top end, but I think he either broke a con rod, or had one come loose. But to that happen at speed and everything just settle out of the way to drive it home is unreal!

My next plan is to take the head in and have it looked at to see if it needs anything. I will then start to pull my 2F apart to start the Frankenstein. ...and I think I just stumbled on to its name, Franky!

Spent Last Sunday on it pulling off the engine wiring harness for the ECU and getting ready to pull the rest of the wiring harness out so I can compare and figure out exactly what I need out of it too. Got the dash off and found out there was a prankster in its past. Every air duct inside was filled with confetti and baking soda. Nice mess!

I just pulled out the whole fuse panel connected to the harness and everything else I could. I read in the service manual that the fuel injection system needs another lead to go somewhere. Is that in the main ignition switch? Would it be just as easy to swap out the newer one from the 62 into the 60 and then all that is there and included in the wiring right away? Since I have it all apart and available is that an easier way to go is to swap out the harnesses??
