I just got the cylinder head back today. $264

It needed new exhaust valves which drove up the original $185 quote.

Who knows when they actually finished it, but it has been almost three weeks.

It looks good to me though!

I don't know if they painted it or it's really clean though. Can't tell. The shop really wasn't that talkative, but I have 6 exhaust valves to make a jacket hanger out of

I didn't even pull the old spark plugs. They gave them back, still look good to use...... I won't do that, but it's kinda funny.

That's pretty- and seems like a really good price to me. They obviously take pride in their work.

Looks really good Kline, do you have all the parts to do this yet or are you still waiting on some items? What are you going to do with regards to the accessory routing? Since you are in TX I assume you are going to keep AC?

I've got all the parts. Some need cleaning. Some need cleaning up (wiring). I don't have gaskets and such yet, but this whole project has to take a back seat with school and work on my plate. The 60 is my DD, plus I don't have a house with a garage.

Accessory routing will be left in tact. Keeping the AC. Even though it doesn't work at the moment lol.

Just declared my Architecture minor yesterday. This coming Fall will be my last semester. My major is Organizational Leadership and Supervision. College of Technology at University of Houston. GO COOGS

A business focus at a Technology college? Ever think of becoming a BPA (Business Process Analyst)?

Come help me work on mine and I'll give you some space in the garage! Seriously though I've got a line on an old mechanics shop right by my office. Twelve hundred a month for fifteen hundred feet. I figure we can three or four guys together to share it. Plus my company is going to rent the shop next door for our pump rebuilding shop. Hoists, forklifts, shop cranes, hot water pressure washer, soda blaster, bearing heaters, etc. Any takers?

I'd love to come help you work on yours. No need to bribe... Well maybe a beer. But that's the usual right? :grinpimp:

I'll ask around if any of the guys need some space. It may be useful to someone if it's in a good location for them. I don't have the money for it. So that's my limit.

Got some tech coming in my ROTM thread soon :)

Any updates on this Alex?

Funny that you should post here. I was actually just about to!

I have been in the process of buying things, and I just pulled the harness out of the garage so I can start figuring it out.

I bought a 1991 Model Electrical Wiring Diagram Book. $19.24 on eBay shipped to me.

I ordered some parts from RockAuto:

- BA 143-0657 Beck Arnley Thermostat 180 degree
- NP 671-6180 Denso Spark Plug Wires
- NG 6937 NGK V-Power Spark Plugs (6)
- FEL 9833PT Fel-Pro Cylinder Head Gasket
- FEL MS94710 Fel-Pro Intake & Exhaust Manifold Gasket Set
- FEL 35494 Fel-Pro Thermostat Housing to Head Gasket
- FEL 35307 Fel-Pro Thermostat Housing Gasket
- FEL 60910 Fel-Pro Throttle Body Gasket
- (2) Wix 51515 Oil Filters (future use)

All of that for $154.39 Or 3/4 of a paycheck in college life!

I have a list of parts that I want to go OEM for. (pending they still exist)

- Distributor Cap
- Distributor Rotor
- Distributor Cap O-Ring
- Distributor Shaft O-Ring
- Air Filter
- Intake/ Exhaust Hardware
- Thermostat Housing to Head Bolts
- Thermostat Housing Bolts

Waiting on that, because I may need to get some new connectors for the wiring harness (if they exist).

I need to research the fuel system more. I read a little bit about different types of filters, I'll ask some questions when I can get more specifics.

Still debating sending the fuel injectors for a cleaning/ refurbish. Money is the biggest factor for me right now.

Anyone know if I should use a FJ62 throttle cable or an FJ80 throttle cable? Also the gas pedal I need to figure out. FJ62 pedal, or modify the FJ60 pedal?

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure there will be more

I know most of y'all are thinking this right now

I'm working on it :flipoff2:

Pictures make everyone happy right?

:wrench:

FJ62 gas pedal is a bolt in swap according to Kevin Rowland's 1HZ swap (the 1HZ has a cable as well), and I would assume the cable should be very similar if not the same from 62 to 80.

I know you already bought them but I'd go Toyota on the gaskets.

Not sure how much you follow my thread but I'm doing a 3FE rebuild using a donor motor. A 2F just popped up in my area for the best price (;)) so thinking that plus my old motor might go good together in another truck. :)

thrttle valve on 62 and 80 are the same- the cable will work in either

I was just thinking that the cables may be a different length. Although the engine bays are roughly the same size.

About the gaskets: I hesitated, but for the most part the gaskets are simple paper gasket. The head gasket should be the only concern. I looked at the photos of the 3FE gasket when the cylinder head I have was removed. The Fel-Pro is identical visually. All the holes that the factory one had. I will lay it on the cylinder head for some pictures later. I have faith that someone who makes gasket can produce a quality part.

Looking good!

Kline, I wonder if the difference (if there is one) between the Fel-Pro head gasket and the Toyota OEM head gasket is in thickness. A difference in thickness would change the effective volume of the cylinder chambers...and affect the 'volumetric efficiency' of the engine...if also not other factors...

I am pretty sure that Toyota now sells Fel-Pro ex-in manifold gaskets (at least they look identical) because the original Toyota OEM ex-in manifold gaskets were two pieces and made from some flimsy paper and were bunk...

...but I'm not sure about the head gasket...? If all the MUD heavies are recommending OEM head gasket, maybe might be worth considering their advice (it's beyond my current understanding to be able to convince you otherwise)...

...I'd just hate to see you put all that work into it and then risk it all on a trivial adjustment...

@Slow Left I just measured the Fel-Pro head gasket. 3mm.

Here are some pictures

How thick is the OEM?

I don't know how thick the OEM head gasket is...but either way, I'm not sure measuring it new and not assembled counts...since it gets squished (I think that's the technical term for it...) when installed.

But I'm thinking that if folks are concerned about shaving 0.020" (20 thousandths of an inch) off the head, and since 3mm is 0.118" (118 thousandths of an inch), then the tolerance of error in the gasket thickness should be small in order to get you where you want to be...

...but like I said, since I haven't worked through this problem before myself, I'd trust the advice of the MUD heavies (the real dirty gurus) on this one...

I have a new OEM 3FE head gasket in the shop, I'll take a measurement tomorrow unless someone beats me to it.

I'll wait for a measurement.

And it sounds like anyone who has built a 2FE has gone OEM. If it's the same or damn close... I guess I'll be the first to know if the Fel-Pro will work :D
