How fast have you taken your fj40 up to?

The fastest I've had mine up to was about 7 or 8 MPH and that was coasting it off the trailer down the driveway and into the garage. That has been the only time I've "driven" it. Hopefully I can actually drive under its own power once my restomod is done.

70+mph? - Maybe falling off of a cliff!

My last trip to SoCal, according to the garmin, average speed 54.7, maximum speed, a whopping 63.5 mph (down Cajon Pass). Straight as an arrow, 14 mpg. Just took 5.5 hours......... Oh well.

I beg to differ with some of you. If your running stock gear in a pre 78 rig, you have not seen 85+mph. No way no how. Keywords "stock"... I have got mine to 65 - 70 and she was *scotty voice* gonna blow captn'...

I can maybe see 80 if you have a death wish, but a stocker "CANT DO 90" I will bet 100 bucks....

someone find me a 79-79ish cruiser with a strong running 2F and 3.70 gears i have some money to win!

honestly i think a bill is possible definitly so with slightly larger tires 33" being the tallest. may take a bit to get there but i have faith there is enough RPM there. I did someplace around 90 MPH (per my roommate driving beside me) in my 84 FJ60 with stock springs and some tires that measured to 34.6" actual inflated height, stock 3.70 gears, and tired 2F with at the time 206,xxx miles. took a while and it was flat with little to no wind but she slowly got there. so if that heavy slut can do it i know a 40 that weighs alot less can do it.

Back in the day, in my all stock 79 with 30" tires, I ran the needle past 85. Not sure how fast that really was.

Now with 4.11's and 37's (still 2F) it cruises pretty happily in the upper 70's (gps) although gas mileage is much better closer to 70. One finger on the wheel, no drama. Tight steering, good caster and radial tires.

I'm still rockin' the Early F and you would lose that bet. 10 years ago when it was completely stock on 31" ATs, burying the needle was common with even the slightest downhill grade. Very low mileage motor and a rebuilt carb, but nothing that wasn't original from 1964.

I wouldn't want to do it now even though all the critical systems have been dramatically improved, but youth is funny that way.

I'm gonna take that bet your goona regret the 2f was the best that has ever been.

33's with stock gears (4.11's) The engine would have to do about 4200 rpms to do 100. Easy for a 2f.
The stock tires were 27" or 28" weren't they?

That would push it up to around 5K RPM I believe.

I'm not taking sides, just pointing something out.

In my old mans old v8 45 series we wound it of the clock and the needle started bouncing back and forth same in one of his early project v8 40 series

same setup, running with traffic at 75, I'm only spinning 3000, and that baby if comin to life, if I use the other 2 inches of pedal travel the header starts to hum. But a little cross wind at that speed will give me enough body roll that my ass eats the seat.

As a passenger in an stock FJ45 tray back I have seen 120kph (75 mph) on the speedo, road surface was crushed limestone, loose and dusty with a camber down to ditches each side, one mistake and we would have rolled and rolled.

You might not be far of the mark there. Was a long time ago and I was just a kid, quite possiable he was an ex POM relocated to Oz.

I don't think I will ever forget it - almost brand new LC with a load of coffee on the back, tearing through the Markham Valley on the Highlands Highway.

I think its mostly black top on those sections now - Aussie goverment paid for it :D.

Hrmm, didnt I say "stock" and "pre 78"??? 31's are not stock, and a 79 with 3.70's is not pre 78...

Thanks for making my point Rusty...

With my cruiser and mate's 75's and 79's series cruiser we happily comfortably cruise road surface thats crushed limestone, loose and dusty with a camber down to ditches each side at 120kmph it faster than were aloud to do on our freeways/highways

Pretty sure a stock cruiser could do 100 even with stock tires.

Stock tires in the US might have been 29's or something but lots of 40 series came it tall skinny 7.5R16's.

the 1st 40 i ever bought i had some busy interstate driving to get it home from the car lot. the temp hand didn't work.

i think i was doing around 70-75 when i smelled the anti-freeze, the next thing i know i've got a rod sticking thru the block of the stock f.
cost me $50 to get it towed to the house.

some times you lose.
