How fast have you taken your fj40 up to?

FJ45SWB, 1F, H55F, 3.70's, 2.5" lift and 255/85-16's.

I can go 85 down the freeway and the drivetrain seems perfectly happy. Takes about a week to get up to speed but I suppose that's not really the question.

The big deal though is that the truck's wheel base is too short and any ruts or grooves in the pavement are not fun at that speed and the truck seems like it could lose complete composure real quick. It's much more relaxing to cruise at 65.

If some kind of emergency avoidance situation cropped up at 85 I'm pretty sure the chances of saving it are not good.

if i could hit 60 id be as happy as could be...
i did get the 40 to travel @ 75 once... but she was on a trailer :p

70 is easy, lots of a$$ left at 85, need to pay attention and no sudden steering inputs. Mostly flat and straight down here though. No top/doors etc. Mileage definately goes in the toilet, get around 11 at 70mph. SBC383 H55f on 36's

yikes.... 65 is spooky in mine.... not relaxing in the least.... However, since I just puan OME steering stabilizer and caster shims on the front, it should be less squirrely. Then again, it sounds like the motor is gonna blow

i have been 60 and that was FAST enough for me:eek:..........:D

70, and it was following every imperfection in the road. Spooky. Much more stable at 65.

oh, if you are asking mileage relative to speed:

on the stretches where I go 75/85 for a while (typically northern AZ non-US territory areas ;)), I get about 15 mpg - less so with a severe head wind (which happens about every second time)

Bought my 40 in fresno, drove all night with with two others from seattle. The 40 was on forty's sbc soa I was in a hurry to get her home to start wrenching away got her up to 85. So yea the forty has been up to 85 and stable as hell, at least it looked like it was in the rear view mirror! Thanks to the 06 dodge

110 km/h with 36.5 " swampers and a small block , 4.10's and a sm420 .

i only did that speed to pass a semi , it would go faster but i cruise at 90 km/h otherwise it gets crappy millage.

i don't put my 1000cc italian street bike in the mud so why would i try and go fast in my landcruiser .

140kph - 87mph... In a 47 Troopy... Stock 2H engine w/4 spd and overdrive.

Wouldn't do it consciously though - I was tired and the needle crept up. Better to stay round 60.

About 15 or so years ago, I got my FJ40 to 80 mph with the stock 2F, and even though I dropped in a 350 sbc & a 2 speed over drive 10 years ago, I've never tried speeds like that since. These things are not at home on the highway. Even my BJ60 with a 5 speed, I never push over 65-70 mph. To go fast, I bought an '08 VW GTI, it will do 160mph all day. It makes long trips comfortable and fast.

I have had my '79 FJ40 (400SBC, 33" MudTerrains, 4wheel disks, LockRites front and rear, no PS) up to about 70-75 on I-80. Felt fine at the time, but would have been a hell of a mess if it would have gotten squirrelly.

I took my '74 FJ55 (350SBC, drums, no PS) up to about 90 once.

My stockish '87 FJ60 (2F)wouldnt go above 75 even if had wanted to.

I've done 95, with plenty of pedal to spare--327, overdrive, flat desert and 20 mph tailwind. It actually crept up to that speed because of the tail wind and thought the semi's were going too slow until I checked the speedo

125mph...

on a trailer behind my 01 2500 turbo diesel 5.9 and 5 speed, was bringin it home and was just outside of town in a familiar area and decided to catch some time back.

actual speed i have driven my 82 BJ42 was 75mph (per the spedo) all stock 3B and 4 speed with 33x10.50 tires so prolly a little over 80mph if i had a GPS on me and i still had some pedal left. felt plenty stable on the road. normally i cruise about 60 per the speedo and my GPS showed 65ish mph

back when i drove mine daily, in stock form, it would do about 75 at full afterburn with the main sail up. the last time i had it on the road, after the lift and 33"tires, my brother paced me in my truck at 80. it had a stock 2f with 4spd.

Good for a 120mph+ but so far only touch 111mph once

I do however have 60/75 series steering so a lot more user friendly.

But happiest cruising around 70mph

90mph with 2f and 39" tires.
