The thing that sold these for me are that they have mounting provisions for a brace so that we can tie the J pipe back to the head to make it extremely rigid side to side.
This is a nice improvement over Wits End J-Pipe. I noticed that my turbo has some vibration without anything to support it (more when the oil is 2 qts low and crank is splashing about 🤣). The vibration is transferred down the exhaust and rattles some s*** at idle sometimes.

Not checking the oil level until the light turned on :rolleyes:

Oil pressure was still good (I keep an eye on that gauge) and that's inline with the oil supply feed line so I don't imagine my turbo experienced no oil despite having a careless owner.

Random other question: do you recommend adding any additional oil volume to account for the volume the oil lines and turbo use?

Once the system is fully primed, fill to full on the dipstick, and you've automatically catered for the small extra volume

Our turbos a bit different than the BW that you have as we have an AN 4 fitting with a 1 mm restrictor so we aren't flooding the turbo like yours is but realistically if in your case you are seeing proper pressure there isn't anything to worry about with extra oil capacity. These things already take a ton and the sump is always well submerged.
 
Got a few weeks of seat time on my install, and I gotta say I'm very impressed. It's a perfect kit for someone just looking to bolt on an extra 50ish HP in a weekend.

I'll be posting a video on my YouTube channel on my initial impressions here soon, but I can say it's well worth it.

Doing typical 80 series things in the middle of Wyoming... Also, typical Wyoming, we've had very strong headwinds today but both trucks have been flawlessly running at 75 to 80 mph the entire day. Both trucks are turbo'd. It's 85 degrees ambient and the highest water temp between the two trucks so far has been 201 up a long long incline maintaining 80 mph with sustained 5 psi. This was on the white one which is on Toyo Mt 37s, trail gear bead locks (~135 lbs tire wheel combo), fully armored with the rtt. It's a brick to be pushing uphill into a stiff headwind. Typical cruising down the road flatland has been 194.

Taking the white one back to @ttFJC in Montana and then the wife, boy and I are going to skirt the Western side of Wyoming and meander back to Denver. ~1700 mile round trip

Gave the turbo on two trucks cold water therapy in Montana and sank an 86' 22re 4Runner!






Was a great time though! Fixed a few non turbo related things today on my 80 and will cruise back to the Denver area tomorrow.

BTW, got a great tour of the new Cruisers and Company shop by Ryan today after dropping off the rig! "Rosie" turbo looks amazing!

Thanks! No, not Spears. I looked heavily at his flanges and they are nice products. If this thing wasn't so cantilevered off the manifold his would work great. Maybe get a longer studs so they poke out under the T4 flange so that a removeable brace can be attached to the underside with nuts?
 
If I install this is CA, how much work / time would it be to remove for SMOG each time ?
Unless you plan on having another Y pipe from the header handy, not very convenient. And even then you'd need new hardware for the turbo every time. Depends on your personal tolerance but I wouldn't want do it lol.
 
SMOG in CA is on a two year schedule iirc so it wouldn't be too often and he'd only need 4 new copper nuts, 4 exhaust studs, 4 exhaust nuts, 2 donut gaskets, a T3 Flange Gasket and some AN Caps to cap off waterlines and Oil fittings if he wanted to do it... A Y pipe chopped nicely with a V band added to it and an intermediate pipe to connect to the factory exhaust vband that is included in the kit would go on and come off easily... Wouldn't be that hard. Maybe two weekends, one weekend removal, go test during the week and then one more to put it all back on. Realistically once the hard parts of drilling and tapping the pans and waterlines is done, installation is fairly quick.


With that being said... Everyone should follow their local laws and regulations when it comes to modifying their vehicles
