Apparently front locker = destroyed axles.

I tried driving on pavement in 4-hi with hubs in locked position, extremely hard to steer. I could see it being much easier in dirt or mud where there isn't 100% traction.

I spent today building some sparkler bombs with my uncle to practice some welding and because he apparently wanted some sparkler bombs? Any ways my welds are pretty bad after not holding the gun for about 10 months, good to get back into it to prepare myself to weld spring perches to the 80 axle.

Does any one have leaf springs off the car and can give me a measurement? I need to know what size hole needs to be in the spring perch?

Apparently front locker = destroyed axles.

If you don't know how to use them, then yes. Over 15 years with a lock-rite in front and only one broken birfield. That was me not paying attention. It broke while the wheels were filled turned, tire was lodged between something, and was rocking it back and forth to dislodge. That's the basic recipe for broken birfield.
From Moab to Rubicon, wheeling smartly and knowing when to use it(2-lo mod) results in leaving the trail unbroken.
Road manners are a different story, the only downside I believe to lunchbox lockers.

Restored 80 series rear wheel hubs

Nice job on the build man.... even if its a creepy square eyed lookin van...

Took some measurements from the 60 axle i ripped out from under the 40 for you. Thing is i dont know if theyd be any good for you man. Remember, mines a 40 frame outboarded with ruff stuff pieces to use a 60 series axle. 99% sure we kept the spring under leaf pearches on the 60 axle to line up the new soa pearches though so it might still be what you need..... You make the call dude.

Outside of 2.75" leaf pearch to outside of other pearch measures 42 3/4".
Outside of pearch to backing plate flange is 4 3/4".

We found the CL of the 80 axle by measuring from the backing plate flange to the face where the 3rd bolts in then transferred that mark to the top of the housing. Pinion angle in relation to pearch angle was measured from the flat spot on the top of the centre section and the flat top of the old pearches. The old axle was still under the truck so thats why we used these points.

Just measured my other 60 axle and its 4" from the bp flange to the 3.5" wide pearch so my measurements kinda make sense.... i think.
Good luck man!

my leaf perches are 2.5" wide and my leaf springs are 3" wide... do you have 40 springs or 60 springs? are 40 springs narrower then 60 springs?

Hmm i was 90% sure 60 leafs are 2.75" man. Measured my set in the garage that came off the 60 this winter and they were 2.75 so are the ones under the 40 which came off of an 86 bj60. The ruff stuff pearches are 2.75" my new tmr ones on the 80 axle are 2.5 an0d the stock sua pearches are 3.5".

Are you sure the leafs are 60 stockers?

D

Ok I mis-measured. Springs are Hell For Stout, 2.75" wide. So you have on your 40 frame 60 springs outboarded for a stock 60 axle? So out measurements should be the same right? I have 2.5" perches as well, just staying SUA.

Tim and I got the rest of the original link brackets cut off. Decided to reuse the 60 series brake line because it doesn't have any crazy bends in it, all I need to do is weld a few tabs to hold it in place. Fun!

what were you going to do about the WMS width? were you going to just run 1.5" spacers on the 62 front axle? I find myself wishing I hadn't narrowed my housing to match the 62 front WMS width...

I already run 1.5" spacers all around. My current wheels (Tacoma steelies) have 5.5" of backspacing, so I'll just keep my current spacers in the front and none in the rear. Easy.

Looking good. I may have missed this, but are you taking a standard SOA spring perch and just putting it underneath to stay SUA?

Yes is that a problem?

Not at all? Was just curious because I've never seen that before. I'm on the fence about going the 80 FF route or converting mine to ff.

I've seen different perches bring advertised as intended for SUA or SOA, wasn't sure wether the difference mattered or not.

I'm amazed more 60 owners don't do this swap.

I doubt they are any different. I'm leaning towards the 80 route, I just am not looking forward to redoing my traction bar/ spring mounts.

I need to do something soon though, because I'm getting 37s and drum brakes in the rear won't cut it. Heck they even suck with smaller tires.

zj80 ff is a no brainer for cost v gains. I set my fj55 up SUA as well.. I want to do it to the 62, too...it was alot less than any of the other FF options, and all toyota.

Ok so you painted the axle but i dont see any skully wrench dealies anywhere man. Fawking slacker!

Two questions:

1. The face of the housing that the diff bolts to is parallel to the diff pinion right? For example if going for 0 degrees of pinion angle (I am) can I use the flat face of the housing instead of mounting the diff in there?

2. The pinion angle should be the same we there the suspension is loaded or unloaded right? Going for a 0 degree pinion angle the perches will be perpendicular to the diff face with or without the weight of the vehicle? So in setting pinion angle vehicle weight shouldn't matter unless pointing the pinion upward?
