The 60 PS pump has a bronze bushing rather than a ball bearing like the 62 does. When that bushing starts to wear out the force from the belt starts to pull the shaft and it quickens the demise of that bushing. Eventually it will lead to the seals failing.

My guess is that it’s getting close to time for the Saginaw pump @MoaByte. You’re buying yourself some time by lubing that bushing up.

It’s not a replaceable part either, so you can’t rebuild the pump. And rebuilt pumps from rock auto or the like didn’t change the bushing so they fail rapidly.

Thank you. I got 37 years out of it, I can't complain about that.

Why do you think the bushing isn't replaceable? It may not be available as a replacement part, but it's definitely replaceable.

@MoaByte listen to @cps432 - Sag is the way.

Yes you could make the unobtainable bushing and press the old out and the new in. Check for play, possibly do it over again, etc. Some time and money and know how and it might work. Or buy a Saginaw pump for like $80 from the parts store and spend 25 minutes installing and bleeding it.

Sure, if you have a machine shop and can remove the old one and fabricate a replacement. It could be done. I’m saying as a general serviceable part it’s not replaceable and there’s a reason it’s not done on any of the remanufactured units available on the market today. It’s way easier to modify the bracket with a grinder and install a Saginaw pump.

If you or someone you know has replaced that bushing then I would buy you a damn beer because holy hell that’s amazing.

You mean everyone doesn't have a lathe, or two, in their garage? ;)

Does the gearbox need to be replaced as well if doing the SAG pump?!

It’s not 100% necessary. However, the old box will have old seals. The sag pump has much higher pressure output and will lead to old seals failing quicker than they normally would.

I installed a gear box from an 80 series into my truck just to push it around the driveway/garage while I’m building the engine. It’s a brand new unit. I plan on installing the sag pump when I install the engine.

The other issue you have to think about is contaminating your new pump with old crud from the old system. You can put the sag pump in there and roll with it, but you’ll be asking for issues down the road.

With the Sag, do we use the pink ATF?
I noticed my stock pump was not using the pink stuff but I topped it off with a few ounces of the pink stuff and the need to oil the bushing seems to have gone away.

I’m pretty sure you can use either atf or power steering fluid as long as you stick to either or. I might be wrong about that.

I’m pretty sure the answer is in this thread. It’s just been a while since I’ve read it all.

If anyone wants a new bushing, I'd be glad to turn one for them. PM me.

@MoaByte I have a year (or has it been two) with red ATF in the Sag pump. No issues. If you want your old original “Toyoda” cap on top of the Sag pump, I am working with a fellow Mud member on that. Just did another test mold today.it

@cps432 FYI

There is something endearing about seeing TOYODA spelled out under the hood. Honestly I thought about how much I'd miss that when weighing the pros vs cons. I'm so glad you are taking this on. Count me in!
Not to derail this thread but search “Cruiser Trash Parts thread” - I made a post about it there.
