It's not a theory.

It's Fact?? Enlinghten us @OGBeno 😉
I’ve owned five, ‘69-‘76, all with original paint when I bought them. Don’t remember any of them with white behind the grille.

I've been tied up with domestic duties lately and haven't done much. I did take the front doors off and tried a crushed dry ice and isopropyl alcohol mixture to try to get the Dynamat Extreme off. It was very interesting, it seemed to either work incredibly well or not at all. Very little rhyme or reason as far as I could tell but large areas would just sheet off using a scraper and other areas wouldn't budge with a hammer and scraper. I think I will just remove the remainder with a scraper and call it a day.

While the doors were off I saw that each door has a plate underneath (see photos) that I had never noticed before. Toyota calls that a Front (or Rear) Door Weatherstrip Holder. My front passenger one is corroded beyond use but the other three are in pretty good shape. Just one more thing to chase down at some point.

Yes, I remember those!

What a pain in the a$$ to remove this butyl tape. Got the back doors finished. Still have a lot of work to do on the front doors. They still have dynamat and butyl tape on and in them.

On the bright side, this is the last thing I am doing before lifting the body off the frame.

Is there a secret for getting that tape off?
The tape is easy. Scrape what you can with a gasket scraper and then use Goo Gone and a green scrub pad. Wipe with towels periodically. Use a plastic scraper if you want to minimize paint damage.

Dynamat Extreme inside the door was the issue.

@Lifelong40Fan I did use one of these to thin the butyl tape in areas where the scraper wasn’t working. It helps to “smear” the material out so it’s relatively thin before you break out the Goo Gone. Also letting the Goo Gone sit for hours or even a day helps.
