Question: if I go one size up to 12mm 1.25 would I need to drill it out or just re-tap with bigger size?

Or a Time-Sert, but it's a more expensive option and maybe not needed for your application. I did use one on a stripped front brake caliper, which is more critical.Helicoil if they got right size
