So, what's the plan? New short block, swapping in a jy motor?

That is an impressive hole in the block.

New LS Gen III 364 motor w/LS3 heads. Good for 450HP, so a little bump over what I had. It's basically an LQ9 with LS3 heads on it from the factory.

Parts list is in post #333 - Summit has a ship date of 10/12 for the motor so just keeping myself busy until then.

I purchased a used cast iron block to swap the internals (from this motor) into, if they are any good. Been wanting to build a motor myself and currently taking the HP Performance engine building class on-line so I will be using it for that.

I was hoping to put some miles on the truck before I blew the motor. Guess that was asking for too much.

The way I look at it... at least it was an obvious failure. No annoying ticking sound or languishing issue that came and went. Just BOOM! Game over. Next...

Do you think some JBWeld would do the trick to fix her up? LOL...

As long as you embed some fiberglass drywall joint tape in the JB Weld repair ... sounds like a solid idea to me!

Personally I'd strip the block, blast the whole thing, coat in clear lacquer, order a glass top and make it in to a coffee table. Looks like a great conversation piece. Seen it done with a blown Ferrari engine and everyone always wanted to ask questions. Of course, then you'd have to relive the moment forever.

@mtkreitz any updates since September? Were you able to make the new engine setup work? I am in the middle of an LQ9 swap into my 97 FZJ and was hoping you could send me the wire diagram you created? I would really appreciate it! Hope you're out enjoying your rig.

I went a different direction on the engine. After talking to my machinist I decided to build a new motor instead of buying a crate motor. The pandemic was causing supply chain issues for GM so this was supposed to be faster, however in reality it may not have been.

I figured that if I put an "LQ9" back into the truck, that would be great... but a lot of time and effort to get back what I previously had. So, I decided to build a 408 stroker. Why replace the motor with what I had when I can pay 3x as much and start worrying about snapping axles and overheating again??? Man-math...

Bored a 6.0 cast iron block .003 over and added a forged crank, pistons and connecting rods from Scat. AFR heads, COMP roller rockers, Trailblazer SS intake, etc... I am thinking it should be good for 500HP and 500 lb. ft. of torque at the flywheel, at a minimum. I'm really hoping that cooling isn't an issue again but suspect it will be...

Also had the fuel injectors forensically tested to verify they were the cause of the hydro-lock. Took them to Fuel Injector Specialists in Mesa, AZ where they determined that #7 was leaking badly, so was #1... just not as bad. Also said there was over 30% variance across the injectors. NEVER buy injectors without having them flow/leak tested and matched before putting them into your engine. Lesson learned.

I am hoping to get the engine in the next few weeks and stab her back into the LX. I will post up more when that happens.

@Shepherd4x4 The original swap was performed by @RockJock82 so he would have that info, I do not.

Pistons rocking in the cylinders was also one of my concerns but figured I am not making a 200K mile motor. I would just be happy to drive it and get a kick out of smoking my 37’s :)

With the dart block it would probably last 200k. Its 2000 bucks which isnt crazy and you could probably bore it to a 427. Maybe you already looked into this.

what is going to be the cooling solution, with new setup? Sucks on knocking a hole in the block.

Sticking with the RonDavis radiator and twin SPAL electric fans. May need to vent the engine compartment if I cannot get the heat to escape. Also ditching the engine plastics as well as going with a 75% water, 25% antifreeze mix. Thanks ARJMN for the tips!

You can add some snapped axles to that engine block coffee table you're working on =)
