agree to the comprehension part as i’m still looking for some sort of estimate to pull and repair MY engine, not purchasing another one. i guess it’s the price range may be too large to be of help 😎

IF your block and crank are reusable, you are still looking at AT LEAST 10 thousand dollars.

I think I was previously thrown by “new short block”. As a layman not a mechanic, I’ve always heard the term ‘new short block’ as ‘new engine’ 😎

You've given a shìt description of your engine. Sorry.

What do you mean by "slung a rod"?

Your description sounded like it was something that happened prior to you buying it.

Beyond that, to me that suggests maybe its punched a hole in the block?

Or a catastrophic failure?

Is the head damaged? Valves damaged? Crank damaged? Rod damaged? Block damaged?
Can you remove and dismantle the engine? Or totally reliant on a shop,

See how this is a how long is a piece of string scenario yet?

Reach out to @Fj80oregon as far as possible repair of your engine and see if you can find a shop locally to pull and put your engine back in. If you can't find a shop in your area then you get into shipping. Not to many automotive shops will want to touch it tho and then wait around for your engine to be rebuilt that will tie up space in there shop / store your vehicle.

Gotcha. Yea, I probably need someone to open her up and give a specific diagnosis, then circle back here. 🙂

Its not possible to give an accurate, to the penny estimate without pulling yours, taking it apart to see what all it needs, and then putting it back together. It came apart for a reason...... Like @cruiserdan has said, plan on $10-15k. Anything less consider it luck or a blessing.

As everyone else is writing and I am confirming...
LS SWAP IT
The first line in your first post was hard to interpret. This earned you "English is my second language" badge.

1) Throw in a used 1FZ-FE engine with unknown history will be the cheapest option. Should be less than $5K, including labor if you don't open it up. You get the "Sensible but Cheap" Badge.

2) Pay someone to build a "new" engine with a new Toyota short block, and the remaining components from your engine. I believe a naked head is still available from Toyota (add $$) assuming your head needs replacing. I would budget at least $15K for this option. You will earn the Badge: "All OEM"

3) Pay >$30K to swap in a 2UZ motor with barely more power than a 1FZ-FE for the "I did it and I shouldn't have" Badge

Solid info, chief.

Bit like a Harley.

They turn large gulps of gasoline into noise, without the annoying by product of horsepower!

Edit: probably should spell check punch lines

It's said in jest, but he's spot on.

Be careful what shop you choose to do the work.

Do some homework so you have a grip on the road your about to go down.
You want to have a decent understanding what it takes to rebuild/ replace an engine, and so you can have useful conversations with your mechanic.

Also, do your homework on what shop to use.
There's loads of threads in here from guys who are frustrated with shìtty work, or shìtty service after 6+ months of delays because they've used their local guy who specialises in oil changes, and swapping in new coil packs as the solution to everything.

My mechanic took two years to get my 80 back on the road!! The dude is fùcking mentally deficient or somethi . . .

Oh, wait! It was me :hmm:

Ok so what is broken on this engine? Does it run? I can talk prices but don’t know exactly what we are fixing so I will be general in my response. You can buy a rebuilt long block that’s oil pans to valve cover for $7500 with a $1000 refundable core charge. Shops in Oregon area charge $3/5000 to install a engine , most shop will not provide a warranty if they did not rebuild the motor or even if you bought a new short block they are providing no warranty (most shops). if you want to rebuild your self with OEM Toyota parts it can be done for 3-5k. Obviously depending on what you want to replace or even if you wanted to go cheep/Chinese parts you could keep the price lower. It’s around $2000 in parts to rebuild the long block only. Thats pistons, rings, bearings, head gasket kit, timing components, other gaskets, head studs, and FIPG. Machine prices will vary roughly $1000 for a full head rebuild. $1000 for block to be bored, decked and assembled. Now the money to me is time and it’s easy to say just rebuild it yourself but it takes A lot of time to do it the right way and you need space, time and some equipment. You can buy full rebuild kits for around $1k but you get what you pay for. Most of the engines I have sold have been from people getting quotes $15-20k for a engine rebuild and swap. That pricing may seem crazy but if you get into an engine bay you realize how much stuff is 25 plus years old and on its last leg it really adds up quick. Anyways you wanted some numbers there they are.

I said that the labor to install a used engine (plus whatever that engine costs you to buy) would probably run around $2,000.00.

It appears that both of us are having difficulty reading today.

But with you it's understandable, you're old.

@mjulaw

Three somewhat nearby shops to check with. OTM @Bama4door in Leeds, @RocketCityCrzrs, Rory, in Huntsville, and Mosely Motors, @FJ60Cam, in Memphis. Any of these shops can give a proper diagnosis and direction for repair, replacement, or whatever direction you want to go.

Fawker..... just because it's true does not mean you have to point it out. :moon:

My Camero is fine, by the way. :flipoff2:
