I am going to have the old bedliner sandblasted off, then primer, and a new high-quality bedliner reapplied. I will probably continue the black theme on the bedliner color. The Line-X provider can pull the original 557 Creme paint color, but I'm afraid it won't quite match the 37 year old paint on the rest of the truck. If it's not going to match, I'd prefer to just stick with black. I'm also going over the bedrails, so I think it would look odd with two different textures and slightly mismatched color. Quality black bedliner over the rails looks pretty sharp on the Marline Crawler truck, so I'm going to try it on mine.

If you are worried about color matching the bedliner, why not have the bed prepped, as you are going to do and then painted the color of the truck. Then use some Rustoleum clear bedliner. I'm sure LineX probably has a clear bedliner as well. Seems to be a popular way to do bed liners so they match perfectly. I had one of my trucks done with a white bed liner...the color isn't exact but it's way way better than a black liner. Black always seems to look dirty to me or faded.....and the way it goes up over the bed rails draws too much attention to it. Even a slightly darker color than stock or tan or something to match the interior would be neat(maybe brown to match the stripes)?

Just my opinion...I've spent far too much time thinking about bed liners. An embarrassing amount actually.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure what to do on bedliner.

I'm going to keep researching and see if I can find refurbished OEM Toyota wheels for 1979 - 1983 Truck.

Yeah...the wheels you bought are for trucks with IFS...1986+....IFS wheels don’t work on solid front axles unless the diameter is much larger (some have fit 17” FJC steelies on SFA rigs with no spacers).

You are 100% right....you need 79-85 wheels or to run spacers in front.

Do you know if the OEM 15" Land Cruiser wheels with hubcaps will work?

They will. The steel wheels off of SFA trucks work on SFA and IFS, just not the other way around (generally).

Really, the only difference between the Land Cruiser wheels and the ones you want are the hubcap clips...all dimensions and the “look” are the same.

The Cruiser wheels looks great with or without hubcaps, and you can get them new from Toyota. Last best deal I found was right at $100 per with free shipping. They will arrive in black primer, and should be painted even if with black paint/powder coat.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure what to do on bedliner. I need to repair the rust at the seams where the wheel-well meets the bottom of the bed.

Bed liners can make or break these old trucks. I was seriously considering a tan bed liner on my LC79....tan to match the interior. Would have been really nice but white won out. The white they sprayed(LineX....a special type of LineX though...it is used on boats..it's very very low texture...made for boat decks. I did not want a regular coarse or aggressive bed liner). They got the texture right but the color wrong. However, with some dirt, probably some yellowing and maybe the truck's paint changing....nobody would ever see the difference in color. When it was new, it was pretty apparent. I was pretty bent out of shape over it but it was so much better than black, I didn't care. We have done a lot of 40 tubs in black and it always looks rough to me. Faded. Dull. Dirty.

We have been using Raptor bedliner for a while now. We end up tinting it to match...as close as we can....the paint on the truck. It's not always exact but it's bedliner and since it's textured, it kind of diffuses the color. Raptor even has pre-made colors now. I can not recommend the Raptor setup highly enough. It's hard to screw up and the results are really nice. You can choose your desired finishes, thickness, color....everything. Prep is key though....so you need to make sure your bed is in good shape before you start. Check out my LV build in my signature...we used some great products to seal up rust, deaden sound, coat, etc. Clean that bed, scuff it, seal up the rust or bare metal(we use Master Series Mastercoat), light scuff, clean, clean, clean, mask EVERYTHING, spray it with Raptor. Done.

Do you know what the backspacing is for the OEM Land Cruiser steel wheels?

The 1979-81 4WD trucks used the same part numberd wheels as FJ40s. the only difference was what color they were painted and in the case of the standard pickups there were no hubcap clips.

I hate myself even as I type this, but you could just run a quality 1” spacer. Unless of course you can return those wheels after mounting tires? (Which look DEADLY by the way).

I'm a big fan of the round headlights, and like josey I HATE when people coat whole trucks in bedliner.

Anywho, Monstaliner is a pretty nice product. I used it to coat my Jeep YJ's hard top and it was pretty durable and looked good. I mixed a little bit of black glossy paint with it to give it a little bit more shine (just since it was the hardtop). I hit trees and all sorts of stuff with it and it never flaked off. Was really happy with it.

That’s perfect use of bedliner aside from in the bed. Frankly I can’t believe you keep reminding us you owned a Heep. Good thing you’ve moved past that now!

Ha! Yes I know I know, I'm not ashamed though. Aside from KLF's Toyota my Heep was the most reliable car I've owned. I was never hesitant to jump in it and go somewhere. It never let me down, always started and drove really well for what it was. I did a lot of work to it so it's still got a place in my heart. She's still stupid reliable, and the new owner (who I actually saw a couple weeks ago) loves it and is using the hell out of it. I guess I was just one of the lucky ones!

I'm thinking about swapping to some Wheel Vintiques until I can find the correct OEM Pickup wheels (Toyota Part Number: 42601-60082).

Does anyone know if this wheel will work? Does it have enough backspacing to clear the tie rod?

Brand: Wheel Vintiques

Model: Series 62

Wheel Diameter: 15"

Wheel Width: 6"

Bolt Pattern: 6 x 139.70mm / 6 x 5 1/2 in.

Backspacing: 3.75 inch

Center Bore: 4.25 inch / 107.95 mm

Lug Nut Seat Style: Conical Seat 60 Degrees

I think you need to stay under 3.5 bs. More like 3 3/8
Cross-over steering is a bit more forgiving on back spacing. If you have the factory push-pull, you can get away with 3.75". It will clear the rod ends, but it will rub the boots on the rod ends. I currently run 3.75" on my SA 4Runner.

Well, I just test-fit the Wheel Vintiques Series 62 wheels I referenced above. I was trying to pick a wheel as close to factory Toyota steelies as I could.

They are almost identical aesthetically.

The rim edge clears the tie rods.

And the brake calipers clear the barrel of the wheel.

But the slots machined into the wheel do not clear the front corners of the brake calipers.

You can see where it's rubbing the caliper here.

After a s***-load of test-fitting all four wheels, and some light intermittent grinding, this is the result.

It clears the wheels after light grinding of the brake caliper.

Obviously I would approach this wheel and tire setup differently knowing what I know now. I had already purchased the 15" BFGoodrich KM3 tires before I realized the IFS Toyota steel wheels I bought wouldn't fit. In hindsight, I would have just kept the 16" wheels/tire setup that was on the truck until I could find the correct OEM steel wheels.

Regardless, I think this wheel and tire setup will work after grinding the caliper.

Now off to powdercoat. I'll post pics once I get everything mounted.

Beautiful truck. I’d match the wheels to the body or of the colors from the stripes if you put the decals on.

Here are some pics of my favorite Hilux (1979) of all time. The tan Softtopper and the tan wheels/caps are exactly how I would build a 1st Gen if I ever owned one:

Actually, that truck just sold. It was on Instagram as Rusty_Hilux. I think its headed to North Carolina.

Several people have mentioned color-matching the wheels tan/brown. To me, that’s a little too “matchy”. Obviously this is totally subjective, but I like some contrast between the wheels and the body color.

I’m 99% sure I’m going to set it up like this with black wheels. I had a similar color combo on my 80 and loved it.

That Softopper is awesome though!

A+
