RODa'M: Pappy's 1985 4Runner Deluxe
I've owned this truck since 1988. Yep, 20 years ago I drove her into the stable, and I have no intention of turning her to pasture. Currently 301,000 miles are on the ticker. Second engine, but original unopened transmission. Primary use of this truck is back country exploration for periods of 1-2 weeks. Secondary use is playing in the rocks at Moab. Significant modifications include:
- DOA Racing 22RE
- 4" spring lift: extended length Alcan rear, stock length AllPro front
- 4:1 single transfercase (for now)
- ARB locker in rear V6 diff
- TrueTrac in the front high-pinion diff
- 4.56 gearing in axles
- High steer cross-over steering (Marlin)
- Dual battery using an Odyssey 925 Drycell battery: powers non-OEM accessories
- 33x12.50-15 MT/KM tires on 8" steel rims
- Front Range front bumper
- Stout Equipment rear bumper with tire/fuel carrier
- Warn 9000
- 14 gallon auxiliary fuel tank from NW Metal Products

- Front seats are original and in near perfect condition. They are currently covered with Okole seat covers.
- I made the panel with the aux outlets.
- Pillar gauges include temp, air/fuel, and vacuum.

The only improvements/modifications I would like to do is install real sliders, and install the R151F with dual 23-spline transfer cases I have in the garage.

You know how many guys would give their right nut to have that "sitting" in their garage? I love that truck, very useful.... What did you pay for it back in 88?

$11,000 was the asking price at Riverside Toyota (CA), and they didn't budge an inch on the price.

Patience my boy. Don't want to overwhelm everybody at once. I'll post up pics from under the hood tonight, and maybe more of the filthy interior. If there is something you would like to see up close let me know.
Not really any interior storage like a drawer system. Since I do occasionally sleep in the truck a drawer system wouldn't work for me. I do have a small "ATV" box that I keep spare parts in.

Dual battery with Optima RedTop and Odyssey 925 Drycell battery. Run through a RV battery isolator (no issues so far). Odyssey powers non-OEM accessories including Uniden 520 CB, Yaesu 2800 2M HAM, two accessory outlets below radio, outlet for Engle fridge, pillar gauges, and ARB locker.

Interior Upgrades
Keep in mind that this was a bare bones "deluxe" grade truck. Many of the SR5 amenities were not to be found in this truck, but they were bolt-in options with no modifications required. They include:
- Tilt steering column with intermittent wipers. Needed IFS steering shaft IIRC.
- Dash clock.
- Center console with 2-compartment box and padded armrest.
- Instrument cluster with tachometer and full gauges, such as they were.
- Rear shoulder seat belts.
In addition this truck came from Japan without a rear seat. Once it arrive here an aftermarket seat was installed, but it was a full bench. Recently I found a split bench at the boneyard and installed it, or at least the back part. The bottom bench is in the closet. The new boneyard seat was blue while the truck was brown. Matching Okole seat covers fixed that.
Pic of go-fast stickers.

Is that a digital readout on the A/F gauge? Does it show you an actual ratio?

It's actually a series of lights that sweep left to right as the Ox Sensor sends the pulses. No numbers, it's all relative.

Love the Ed Abbey references here!
I need to get a better look at Pappy's truck, it's the only SAS truck I know of local to me, and I *might* need the measurements soon.
It looks great in person too! Totally "right" proportions. Amazing how good a built 4-runner like that can look!

I must modestly admit I like the way it looks too. But, I'm more of a "function" kinda guy. What ever I bolt on the truck has to improve the trucks ability, and it needs to stay within the mission of being an expedition truck. For me it has to work good first, and if it looks good too as a result, great.

Great looking truck?
Is that a Stout rear bumper? Would you mind putting up a couple of photos if it? I plan to make a similar bumper for my 4Runner.

It is a Stout. I'll take some pics after the sun comes up tomorrow. While I really like the bumper the only change I would do is the pivot for the rack. I think the "trailer" spindles are a cleaner design. If Grant's welds ever break I'll modify the rack this way. Problem is, Grant's welds don't break. I'll explain tomorrow with the pics, but I recently modified the rack.

Very nice 85 man. Love what you have done with it. Its really cool that you have owned it most of its life, I wish I could say the same for my 85, but hey, I was still swimming around in my dad's junk in 1985....

Done. I posted up some pics in an album.
Backside of bumper:
Backside of rack showing NATO can mount. I added the hoop part of this mount. Originally I had Grant make the rack for a 50 cal ammo box. I can now use both depending on if I need the extra fuel or not.
Pic of the bumper with the shackle mount, taillights, and latch post.
Pic of the back-up lamp, latch, and lock.
I recently added this 2 meter antenna mount.
A shot of the CB antenna mount and the rack hinge.

I also have the Stout rear bumper, but my swing out is different. Instead of seperate hoops for spare tire and gas can, my swing out just has a third bar going all the way across. I am recycling my 85 and hope the bumper and brackets fit on my 95.

Like this? I owned this truck for a few years and this is the bumper I had on it.

Exactly. I am suddenly inspired to rip the OEM stuff off my 95 and get this installed. Bumper is off my 85, but brackets are still on the frame. This bumper was one of the best things I ever purchased for a truck.

Very nice 4Runner Pappy. Reminds me a bit of my own.
I'm in the middle of installing TRD elockers front and rear. Got them both in but the front was a biatch! I didn't have enough clearance for the OME U-bolt to go between the elocker and spring perch without shaving an 1/8" off the U-bolt. I just have to get them wired now. Write-up to follow as promised.
