And again a reiteration of the small things in this reconstruction. I ordered the correct Toyota plastic wiring ties that clamp into the fenders. These are sweet and it's these small detail-oriented things that will hopefully lead to a great finish build.

Man, I don't know Cameron. It seems like chicks these days have a taken a real backseat to this truck and engine.

...and you let me use non Toyota parts for this? Crud. I need to order a few bags of these now.

So many non Toyota clips over the years, I didn't even think to see if I could just order more...

Dan

Everyone knows that if they were to build a car by purchasing each part individually, the end result would cost up to 10X more.

I remember in 1988, when purchasing my 2 year old FJ60, everything was in immaculate condition. The car looked brand new inside and out. I didn't think much of the engine bay. Would pop the hood to check the oil, kinda peer around a bit, then slam the hood and drive away. Hmmm, its the engine. So what.

As decades go by and things begin to deteriorate and we work on the thing over and over again with maintenance & stuff, the engine kinda becomes part of us; a loyal and dependable friend. We see once shiny fasteners rusting. Once perfect paint now rusting along it's egdes. We see dirt and grime everywhere. We see our companion dying the slow death and it saddens us….We want the dream back… and it becomes almost an obsession with trying to turn the clock back in time.

New Land Cruisers & other unmentionables are not FJ60's. The USA will never see a FJ60 type vehicle ever again… Ever. And so, in a sense, it is priceless.

So those in the know (or who have the disease) don't really care if the cruiser resurrection requires a 2nd mortgage on the house or forgoing their child's college education fund. All we really care about is that our beloved friend gets to travel through the Toyota-Parts-Time-Machine to live another day.../ and live it WILL!

Well said. The 60 is unique, filled a certain niche, and suits me needs just fine. I would rather think that I am "in the know" instead of being diseased (ha!). My youngest is following along down this path. He's already firmly hooked and has decided that he will get my truck and frequently tells me what he will do with and how he will fix it up.

Looks like you are going to win the engine race between us, at this rate I won't be done until after 2015 starts.

At least I can make up that time not messing with a carb! :grinpimp:

So. . .totally unrelated BUT. . .something arrived at my house today. It's small but has magical powers (that's what she said). Will get boxed up and shipped to you & Jason this weekend.

On a side note - carb/dizzy on delay; won't have the 60 until late December (finger's crossed). I'll buzz u 2moro if u have a few minutes =)

Head bolts in and torqued. FSM calls for 97ft/lbs... I just rounded up a bit to 100 and called it good.
Guesstimating the tork spec is not necessary.

The Harribor Freight Torq wench does that automatically.:rimshot:

Also got the side cover and new gasket into place. FIPG mated to side cover first then side cover to block with new bolts. The two corner studs are discontinued from Toyota. So, the ones on there were cleaned up, a bit of blue locktite and installed into the corners.

Noted for posterity: the studs do NOT go in the corners. In later pics it appears to be corrected.
Also visible in this pic is the hella over-torked side cover fasteners that have already caused the gasket to pooch out from around the bolts. Probably too far along now, but the fix is to get the side cover on a body dolly, hammer all the distorted mounting holes flat or even slightly bowed outward, install cover & gasket w/ a little FIPG both sides, tork M6 fasteners by hand with a nutdriver, just until gasket is seen to start bowing outward at fasteners.

Looking on the bright side, this part of the engine will be self-rustproofing in perpetuity.;)

For my man Dynosaur: :) Don't forget anti-seize!

A little AS is good, but that is too much. AS is highly conductive. It has to be kept away from the business end of the plug. It vaporize in the combustion chamber & deposit a metallic film on the insulator, shorting the plug.

Not a problem when there will be no charcoal canister.
:)
Vent-to-atmosphere.
Oh that's right, you are made of money and can afford to piss away highly volatile RFG.:flipoff2:

Then the oil pressure sender unit. Blue locktite on that one too.

Then a new OEM "big" filter when on--mainly for looks right now. Just for more a personal feeling of "hey, I got the oil filter on!."

Do yourself (or some future owner) a favor and do something with the ground spade on the OPSU. Either smoosh it flat against the can, or bend it and break it off. I can't count how many Cruisers (and other Toyotas) I've seen w/ fried oil gages after somebody knocked the wire off and unwittingly stuck it back on the grd terminal.

Also, leave the oil filter on there, and plug the dissy hole. You're gonna drop a cig in one of those open holes before all is said & done.

See, my thread is good for a number of reasons: It shows what *not* to do as well! Luckily, I'm not a mechanic but a parts guy so I don't feel too bad.

:hillbillie:

Though the torque wrench is a Gear Wrench not a Harbor Freight. Final torque value was 97ft/lbs with a smidge more....

So, Jim, I have time to re-do the side cover. I think I will take it off and have another go at it. I've got another gasket in my worm-hole of parts so redoing it correctly might be the ticket!

Spark plugs are going to come out again anyway (they are finger tight in there), so less AS will go on.

Thanks for the pointers Yoda!!

:)

No sinister motivation at all since no one will ever be as stupid as I in doing some this preposterous!! :)

That said, having part numbers with pictures confirms applicability, confirms availability, and confirms location.

Half those parts will be discontinued in a couple years anyway.
