sorry, Kurt, that was one of yours (I'll send it to you when it's out) - have a spare on the shelf already

otherwise, I had fun :steer:

How is the 5 speed treating you? Worth the money? I am wanting to do the same in mine sooner then later and just keep wondering if it's really going to be worth the extra cash or if I should just put a Toyota 4 speed in it. I know I'm switching back to a 2F.. just haven't figured out if I want to spend the extra money on the 5 speed or just stick with the 4speed/split case I already have sitting in the shed.

the H55 isn't in yet :o - since Tools and inkpot weren't able to get to it before Christmas, we instead decided to wheel the truck over the winter holidays (our "binge wheeling" season) - I'll report how I like the 5-speed when it's in

I got bigger tires now (315s on 80 series 16 rims, up from 33s on 15s), and yeah, I like them a lot :bounce:

also, I am still getting used to the new-to-me power steering . . . :steer:

I cannot really comment on the cost-benefit of the H55 over the 4-spd - the H55 popped up at just about the same time it became clear that the rear main seal was leaking bad, so it was one of these "if it all needs to come out anyway, might as well . . . " dealios

I bought two 3' lengths of threaded rod and 4 nuts for $150.00 Canadian. Should be a fair bit less in the US. I had the flat parts laser cut for free at work. Our sister company is a full out welding shop and they had scraps of the 2" DOM for free and I welded it up at home. I drew it all up in Solidworks first so there was no grinding or cutting just tack and weld.

Would you be willing to email me the cad drawings or whatever you have so I can have some cut and make some too? Thanks!

Pulled the three speed out by myself. Used climbing webbing and a chain hoist. Very easy to control.

Split the cases so I can inspect the t-case prior to installing it behind an H42.

So I have to ask - were these the greaseable pins again? Looks like a solid one this time...seems like that would be tough to break...

I don't know, maybe it's you... :p

Awesome - I have a bunch of retired webbing that I don't trust for climbing, but I'd definitely trust it to pull a transmission.

no, the non-greasable style from Kurt

it's the third one of his I mangled by now: one broke (due to what looked like a casting flaw), one twisted, and now this one - yeah, it's me :hillbilly: :o

you have to keep in mind, this truck gets used for not much else than wheeling :steer:

Replaced oil gasket (10 bucks) and oil change. Total parts and labor 60 bucks here in Costa Rica. Now I need to look at my tires....replacement time I think no?

I have mostly rebuilt my STC soft top bows so I can put my top back on. I may not be able to get our cars out of our driveway tomorrow and may end up finishing the top just to break a trail. I rolled my 40 a few years ago during a steering fix test-drive. The steering was great, but I miss-judged the ditch on the opposite side of the road and fell in. My cage saved my truck. The bows were made of conduit. The new bows are a direct match.

Fired off the ol' 2F this morning - temp was -18*F with wind chill hitting around -45*F , rolled over a bit slow but fired just fine . Oil pressure came up pretty quickly and settled just fine . The Mobil1 5w40 seems to work quite well . Need to change out the trans/tcase oil as it wouldn't shift for awhile .

:cool:Yep that'll work - it reminded me of changing out a clutch in a 76 FJ40 I had in about 1978. A few differences - I took a piece of 3" pipe and ran it across the doors- windows down and used a regular come along and chain. Worked good - only surprise I got was that when I pulled the pipe out there was a perfectly round dent that fit the pipe in the window sills - no scratches just a dent - the tranny/transfer case was heavy enough to put the dent in just sitting there- oops. Not a big deal really - window still worked just fine.:eek:

Hi all,

Nope, this is a case of me not noticing the bypass for this big mud hole! ;)
