Stubby ratcheting box-end wrenches are a real boon in this situation too.

Update time. Recently Zombie has been on fire truck duties while the natives where doing some burning up around our property. This is the first time we've ever been given notice which was nice.

So slipped on an old fire unit and off we went...

Waiting for it to reach our back boundary.

All was saved and it was a good night.

BUT!!!... One my way back I noticed something interesting over the fence in one of the neighbours properties. Made a mental note to come visit them the next day.

Next morning I go visit and sure enough... SCORE!!

I've been looking for one of these for nearly 4 years!!!

Couldn't wait to throw it on for a test fit.

tailgate

Is that an OE tailgate? What did you use for the latches? How did you connect the hinges to the tub? I have a drop down tail gate to install that I'm working through these questions on.

My tailgate is OE, I bought it from a Mudder, It came with all the OE hardware. Those look like OE hinges, Although my license plate mount is on the drivers side. My tub and rear sill are 76 , so I drilled six holes and used rivet nuts. The latches I will fab , I searched FJ40 tailgate and a couple other Mudders had some great ideas for their latches ,which I will copy. Then I will be able to still use my Amby doors.

Took a break from the frustration of trying to line up all my CCOT fenders and foot boards. Instead I rebuilt, painted and installed my heater blower unit.

ooh, nice and shiny!

Thanks for sharing the pics and congrats on collaring the ARB bullbar..

You guys over there must know all about big fires but they scare hell out of me..

BTW - I do realise that deliberately-lit fires are a necessity where you are to get rid of the undergrowth (to prevent the out-of-control/unstoppable fires that heavy undergrowth would otherwise inevitably lead towards). And I always suspected there'd be tension/argument/dissatisfaction associated with those fires.

(Notifying locals who could be affected by smoke or unpredicted fire-movements should be a pre-requisite for a permit I'd have thought.)

Here's a pic of a kiwi fire truck (1979 HJ45):

I'll have OEM latches for sale soon (I am not currently close to the truck or parts) - send me a PM if interested

I fabricated some vent hoses using 1/2 heater tubing. I used some black duct tape to make a wider mouth opening to attach up under the dash. I first rapped it around the outer diameter backwards. Then one wrap normal to create a sleeve. Then one more wrap to anchor it to the tube. Finished off with some silicone high temp water proof tape. I also used a hose clamp to keep it snug and attached. To make the factory looking bends in the hose I used a piece of coat hanger inside the tube. Once you bend it, it stays put inside the tube.

broth9640, nice work. How do you keep it clean? I have fingerprints and scratches all over my work, then I gotta backtrack and re paint, re clean etc.

I have the same problem. Especially when I get impatient and don't wait for the paint to dry. I need 220v in the garage to set up a powder coat oven. Then no more waiting for paint to dry.

My fuses in the panel were getting so hot it burned  my fingers.

1. I unbolted the two bolts holding the fuse panel. Removed all the fuses. They were the correct amp rating.

2. Rolled up some sand paper to the dia. of the fuses and slid it back and forth between the brass fuse holder contacts. Got a bunch of oxidation and crud off that you just could not see with the fuses in.

3. Put the fuses back in in the correct order/amp rating as they were before.

No more hot fuses. All running lights were noticeably brighter. Cranks over quicker. Battery charges better and higher voltage Noticed higher steady voltage on my plug in digital volt meter on the dash.

Wish I'd known you were after one. I had one from a troopy I shipped to the States sitting in my shed in Adelaide for two years until I recycled it.

Out with the new and in with the old!

I've been smelling gas fumes in the rig lately, mostly after filling up. I thought I should check it out this weekend. I was thinking maybe the vapor separator split or a cracked hose. Here's what greeted me when I pulled the cover off.

My 2-1/2 year old CCOT aftermarket hose. :bang:

I guess I should feel somewhat lucky, in reading a few posts about CCOT's replacement, many said they were replacing them after a year due to failure. It was replaced when I installed the CCOT filler neck. The PO had jacked the factory neck so he could use his old style jerry can. The "new" hose was so pretty and new, that I left the old hose attached the the OE filler neck and tossed it in the corner. I was planning on ordering replacement fuel hose from McMaster Carr, so I dug out the old filler neck to get an accurate measurement on the diameter. My day became much brighter when I saw the original hose was still attached to the neck and it was in perfect condition for a 38 year old! :bounce::bounce2::bounce:

IMG_2888.jpg
But damn if it wasn't a bitch to get it on! I had to pull everything to get it in place. The old rubber was much stiffer than the soft and cracked CCOT POS. Happily, the gas tank only had 5 or 6 gallons in it.

I did however get a peek at the pan under the tank.

Looks like I'll be scheduling a fix for that in the near future.
