Installed the new Toyota radiator. 99.9% sure it is leaking. At first I thought it was the petcock, but there is water at the bottom of the fins….above the petcock. Only started leaking when I cranked it and had it running in the driveway.

For sure Toyota won’t take it back bc I bought it in November and just now had time to put it in.

Any thoughts besides the F word??

Double check your clamps are on there correctly. If they aren’t tightened evenly they can contort into an oval shape and let some coolant past the hose. It happened to me when I put a new radiator in my 40

The fluid is above the clamps, like in the bottom lipped part of the radiator. I felt all around the hoses and no fluid.

Bummer. In my case it was pooling at the bottom too but it was sneaking down the bottom back of the top tube and running down the fins to the bottom.

Plot twist!! I took off the shroud to look a little closer. Threw my hands up in the air and put it all back together. Now there is zero leaking. I’m wondering if when I filled up the radiator a few days ago I spilled some water and it got trapped on that bottom lipped area and the fan was pushing it out by the petcock hole. Going to drive it about 10 minutes and find out.

I put one in the 75 sometime back not terribly long ago.....I don't think it tinkled right away but it wasn't long after the install....there were f atomic bombs...ive just lived with it, it's not much. In fact it's probably going in the 61 when I pull the engine swap-a-roo.

My dealership said that the parts I buy have a one year warranty, I warrantied a turn signal at 9 months.

Same scenario…Can’t make it up. Less than 500 miles. Tempted to go back to an aluminum. Soooo, go ahead and drop an F bomb.

I got into the brake situation that I created last week. Man, leaky drum brakes are messy! I ordered 2 new wheel cylinders from @cruiseroutfit and the nifty OEM brake adjuster tool from @Racer65.

View attachment 3939160
That tool is smaller than I thought it would be, but it makes adjusting those things easier. Some observations about the new parts: the yellow colored end of the wheel cylinder that has the adjuster was much narrower than the oem cylinder and does not have the "ramp" that is discussed many times on MUD. I had to use a file on the brake shoe's thick end and a little on the wheel cylinder to get the shoes to insert. Also, I am sure I ordered the correct part, Right Hand for Passenger side, front and rear but they adjust in the opposite direction. I had to loosen the old OEM cylinders by spinning the adjusters towards the axle on both sides. On the new ones I had to tighten/expand the cylinder by spinning the adjuster towards the axle. Overall, this is not my first set of aftermarket wheel cylinders, and they are better than the last set. This is just one OE part I wish was still available. I've save my originals for a rebuild one-of-these-days. But, I drove it to work today so I am happy. Ya'll have a great week!

Looks like it would fit very well for these backing plates. How do you like it? I might have to get one. I got a pair of pliers from my neighbor that have jaws shaped like that tool. I'll post a pic later. They work good for backing the cylinders all the way out and bringing them back in 5 clicks. The brake tool kit I bought had a part like that but it was too wide. Thought about grinding it down until now.

I’m usually in the 80s section, but figured I’d hop over here for once. I wouldn’t even have a Land Cruiser if it weren’t for my dad—he bought his ‘79 brand new and daily drove it everyday until the mid-2010s.

Growing up, I remember riding shotgun with a stack of pillows under me so I could see over the dash. Back then, it was still his daily, and we were wheeling all the Colorado classics—Imogene, Black Bear, Tincup, Taylor Pass—just to name a few.

Because of that, I always wanted a 40 or a 60 from a young age. But my mom had one rule when it came to my first car: it had to have airbags. So I ended up with my 96 80 that I’ve had for the last 9 years… and honestly, I owe her—because the 80 kicks ass.

We’ve been rebuilding the 2F in my dad’s 40 for the past four years. He pulled the motor just because it was tired, not because it had a catastrophic failure. Not long after pulling the engine, some health issues slowed down the project. But we finally just recently got it back up and running .

This past weekend, I brought my 80 back home to start prepping it for a trip to Alaska we are doing in August (my dad’s coming too, but not in his 40). My 80 still needs some last minute love —fuel injectors, rear bumper work, some electrical gremlins—so I couldn’t wrap it up in a weekend.

But I was lucky enough to take my dad’s 40 on its first “road trip” post-rebuild—from Colorado Springs to Aspen. It was a special drive I won’t forget. It ran great overall— needs some minor adjustments—but it was solid.

I’m thinking about starting a thread to document my dads 46 years he has had with it, and the new memories I hope to make with it.

Here are a few photos from this weekend, and a couple throwbacks too. Excited to spend more time on this side of Mud and help dial in his 40.

Cheers,
Andrew

Happens all the time.
I get in the habit of doing a short drive to blast off the residials before i check for a radiator leak. Very common to have it pool up and look like a leak. A radiator pressure tester would find it if there was a leak...

I filled the radiator again this morning. Burped it all out, etc. I went to pick up my daughter and when I go there it was leaking from the same general area as yesterday. Drove it back home and it isn’t leaking at all. I’m wondering if the overflow was pushing water out of the expel hose?

You might have water coming out of the overflow nipple and running down to where you see it pooling. Do you have a recovery bottle? If not, try running a length of hose from the nipple to well under the truck. That way if it's coming out of there it will leak under the rig but you won't see that pool at bottom of the radiator. If it turns out that it is coming from the overflow, you might just need a new cap and a recovery bottle.

Installed procar buckets definitely a lot more comfortable than the bench just not as cool. Passenger seat sits alittle higher but not very noticeable. Wrapped up sniper install with recurve distributor can't believe the throttle response and noticeable power difference. Still need to upgrade starter and alternator but fine for time being.

I bought a Surface Conditioning tool from Harbor Freight and tried it on the bondo/rust.

Surface Conditioning Tool

This thing ROCKS. I would 100% recommend it. It quickly chewed through everything, leaving a nice smooth surface. This was with the 40 grit wheel. There are many grits and even a wire wheel available. That's the good news. The bad news is that it seems Helen Keller welded my tub with her feet. Ugh. This truck is not getting shiny paint any time soon. Hopefully, rattle can flat paint will hide some of the sins as the plan is to get he mechanical end of things done and enjoy the truck. That will let me slowly fix/replace one panel at a time while driving it and still have it looking decent. Nice paint will come later.
