What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week? (36 Viewers)

Have you had your fuel tank sender out to look at it? Mine was wasted. Also, after putting my new one in, it was still hanging up at 1/2 tank when fuel level would drop below that. I took the sender back out and realized the install is clocked so the float does not hit the side of the tank and give false readings. Lessons learned.

Never have but I understand how gauges work and the most likely problem here is a short to ground after the gauge.
I suppose a hung float is another possibility.

When full my gauge only shows at 1/2 tank…then goes down from there. I’ve tried a new gauge, grounds, etc. No idea what the issue is.

Got the bench seats in. If I’m being honest, I love the look, but don’t *love* the seats. The driver seat is about 2-3” lower than my previous seats, they are squishy, the driver seat bottom is smaller than the previous seat I had so it is kind of like balancing (I’m not a big guy…170lbs) and they are slippery. Maybe I will get used to it. I might have to figure out a way to raise the driver seat. Passenger seat is fine and not as squishy to sit in. It feels different driving bc I’m so low. But they look good….lol.

Smoking deal from @clrussell!!

Drive 10 hours yesterday to get them after we were able to get them to KY.

They are the Cruiser Corps covers. Good news is I can do the rear jump seats to match.

No idea on the foam, etc. @clrussell did all of that. Maybe if I add some firmer foam to the driver side…hmmm.

I agree. They look amazing. They will oook better once I pull them back out and refinish all the metal. I just couldn’t wait.

Cleaned instrument cluster contacts for lighting and dimmer / rheostat… I HAVE instrument lights now!!! (But my fuel gauge now reads full full… but I know I only have about 1/2 tank… any thoughts? (Yes I had all the gauges out and cleaned)

Solved! Fuel gauge now reads 1/3… much more believable than full full! The culprit was a missing black insulator. In my haste to put it back together before Blues lost to Jets last night, I musta dropped one. Found it under the chair and put back together… works like a charm now!

Took out the City Racer led headlights and put in the Koitos that I bought from the @CruiserTrash website. I hooked them up today and love the warmer light with the 40 and of course the old school (original) look. I’ll hook up the harness this week and see if the HBI lights up as I put a led in my indicator a while back and some have had luck with just doing that. If it doesn’t I’m hoping to test out the solution that @CruiserTrash has since mine is an early model

Fix rattle with ambulance door latch. Got replacement - but didn’t work properly. The spring too strong. Took it apart, swapped springs. Installed again. Got 1 less rattle

This is why I went to later 40 buckets. I loved the look and nostalgia of the original benches, even after restoring them, but they are not comfortable for me at 6'2" 220 lb. and you do slip and slide around. I hated to swap them out, but functionality over form won. I found that the springs were the issue in mine. Adding foam may have firmed the seat a bit, but the weak springs seemed to be the culprit. I didn't try this but maybe you can build up something under the springs to prevent them from sagging so much...??

I was going to recommend doing just that. The upholstery looks a tad loose, so you have room for more padding. Once filled, the upholstery should pull very tight on a warm day. You could also add a spring or two. I replaced 6 and added 2 springs to my LV Bench seat. I used 9 AWG 1"x2" "No sag" bulk spring and bent my own.

I stuffed mine with polyfill. No photos in that post, but you get the idea. The seat is too firm for my tastes being completely stuffed, but its easy enough to remove some and "tune" it to my weight when it bothers me enough. My '71 has same seat but not polyfill stuffed, and I actually like the support and bounce. Makes me feel like i'm driving an old truck, which is why I drive 40's.

Thanks. So you put the foam inside the springs as in your picture…and then polyfill in all of the other open space? And sounds like you packed it full and just pulled it out until it was dialed in.

Can't say the foam in the springs does anything, but yes I stuffed the void with polyfill. I did not pull any out yet, but its not too hard to take the seat out and adjust to your liking.

I'm all for owning a timing light.
As a professional mechanic of 20 years I've never had use for any of the extra features on expensive timing lights.

A light that flashes when the plug sparks is all you need on these old pigs.
Sounds like he's got a timing light, if he's got the bb in the window, and if the bb is in the window, that's close enough to set the carb up.
If he doesn't have a timing light, he should probably borrow or buy one.
I hesitate to recommend buying one because they're about obsolete.
You're not going to use it besides on your landcruiser and any other classic cars you may have, so buying a nice expensive one is probably a waste of money.

Rather than a timing light— I say buy a cheap carburetor online and slap it on and then you know if it’s the carb. Useful to have when you’re rebuilding your existing carburetor— if needed.

The train horn is going in nicely. Wiring it in as an "anti-theft" deterrent. Should wake up the neighborhood in the event someone is attempting to take the ol' girl.
