Back in the late 1970’s several Vermont FJ40’s started to show up with diamond plate and it was an obvious sign back then, that these rear quarters were being held together by that aluminum band-aid.
Any truck I have seen in the last 52 years with diamond plate immediately triggers those thoughts.

Although my own ‘75 had diamond plate quarters on it when it was delivered…I was told they were protective only…I did pull them off and the body is perfect…

IMO the removal was the best thing you could have done for her. Thank your lucky stars, you didn't find ANY cancer.

I'm with you guys. It's almost assumed that LVs left the GIFU body shop with factory installed rust. A couple of years ago, I went after some paint issues on my quarter panels. My painter kept telling me he wouldn't quote it without assessing the rust. I kept telling him it was rust free. He'd heard that before. Finally he stripped paint and sent me these pics. Imagine his surprise to find this... ;) I'm keeping the pics as proof!

After 40+ years of throwing an old bath towel across my windshield, so I could fully open the hood without scratching it up, I finally made an actual cushion. Not my idea- I was inspired by another forum member on here somewhere. I had some leftover carpet padding , and sewed in a couple of rare earth magnets to grip the windshield frame. It works!

I still have that little white rubbery cushion block on top center of the roof…THIS IDEA you have is terrific. I spent so much time idling and installing the Sniper on my cruiser that the hood does have a little rub in it from that rubber block.. my hood had been opened for weeks on end…. Gonna borrow this

Very nice job.
I would only mention that the hood only makes actual contact with an inch wide area, at least that's how my two 40's were... maybe it's
a bit more on the FSTs.

Without a cushion, my hood lays on the windshield wipers.

I can see that now in your pictures!
The overhang of the hardtop prohibits further contact on the rest of the windshield.

Who made the canvas top? How well does it fit? Factory bows?

Real Steel Bows, powder coated. Dirt Road Tops by Julie, there’s a few threads on here that go into her business. I got the top & bows in summer of 2019. I’m not sure whether either shop is still around.

@igotta40 has a terrific plan so while this came to me while watching tv. I did make it out to the pole barn and find an unopened bag of those pool noodles left over from the kids. I figured red would stand out so I would not forget it was there then hop in and head on down the road .

With a new blade in The sheet rock knife and 2 slices 1/2” apart this will do it for me

One case of “why didn’t I think of that years ago”

I should add…these pool noodles have a hollow core, they’re not solid. By trimming the 1/2” piece out, you have it plus the hollow core space.
