Cleaned. Sorted, Labeled, and Packed parts. Stripped the original DS/PS doors. The internals are in VERY good condition. The OEM plastic barrier was still in place. Received Racer65 repro floor mats for the late model 40s and his 16" steelies!. Most importantly I scored a dorm fridge and add some accessories so it didn't look empty.
Drive my Land Cruiser in a heavy equipment convoy!

Picked up my new winter project. Swapping the H42 to a H41/3 speed combo. Should reduce my gear ratio in 4WD low by about 40%.
Now the question is - to rebuild, or just run it? Leaning toward rebuild but it apparently worked fine when pulled.

You'll like that combination, I run that in my '76 FJ40. I picked up the used H41 from a co-worker and installed it after mating it to a used 3-speed transfer case. Along with the new transition gear and transmission output shaft rear support bearing I used new seals and gaskets in the transfer case. My wife and I drove it to the Solid Axle Summit #1 several years ago and it did great on Black Bear Pass and others, other than the H41 and 3-speed transfer case a stock vehicle. And then we did a 600-mile round trip to Chinle, AZ and Canyon de Chelley for an FJ40 Cross Country Expedition briefcase hand-off.

Yeah I’ve been really struggling off-road with my currently (very fast) ratio. I feel like I’m either murdering the clutch, or running into things too hard because I stall otherwise. The added gearing should help.
I’m definitely going to expect trans/transfer before they go in. The person I bought it from did mention it had some input bearing noise but my H42 does too, and has for 6+ years with no further issues.
I may rebuild to “zero time” it and for peace of mind, and at least take a look at the idler bearings/shaft in the t-case since I know that’s their common failure point. My understanding is the case was rebuilt about 10 years ago, but current mileage on it is unknown.
This all sits behind a 350 small block. I will need to look and see why I get some grinding from the clutch - but only when off-road (never just driving around).
Grinding is odd... I’ve had the fan hit the shroud, but no issues with clutch grinding off road.
I’m not sure how low your 350 will lug... but with some carb, timing, and cam tweaking I can lug down to 400 rpm.
