91, 94, and 97 model year 80 series cruisers sold in the states have the same part number for all 8 front shaft nuts, and a different but same across all model years part number for all 8 rear shaft nuts. The front shaft nut is the same PN as various 4runners, tacomas, and minitrucks.
It doesn't make sense for the same part number to be serrated on the axle end of the shaft to hold tight, but not be serrated on the other xfer case end of the shaft where the nut has to turn to R&R the shaft.
I'm forced to conclude that whoever posted that thread was mistaken, perhaps seeing the ridged paint stuck to the back of the nut.
As to what you saw on your truck, if they are in fact serrated it seems they weren't factory parts.
All of this over some driveshaft hardware.

Man, lots of talk about serrated nuts in the thread lately... Typically, toyota does not use serrated nuts. I don't really feel like looking up part numbers for this right now, but I know from removing both my front and rear shafts on my '92 that none of the nuts were serrated.
On the rare occasion when a nut or bolt flange has teeth or serrations, you turn the other side. The serrations/teeth are not meant to move and scrape up the surface. Ever.

I agree, IMO too much. But I don't want people getting inaccurate information..
I ordered all new nuts from the Toyota dealership. When they arrived, all were serrated. I can post photos of said nuts and the part number in the morning when I get off work.

Since I played such a large part in this getting off topic: I took the tire that blew a bead to get it dismounted, the dirt cleaned out, and mount/balanced. Also realized that the smashed doors causing the dash "door open" indicator lamp to stay lit is enough to drain the battery to ZERO in a couple weeks. Goodbye cheap battery. Now it won't hold a charge.. I'll wait until I find a new body to invest in a gel cell and just charge/jump start until then.

Actually a month or so back - towed 4500lbs of sailboat + trailer.
Picked up a 1968 Cox Camper. Pretty cool. The 80 towed her home beautifully. It only weighs about 960 lbs and towed down the highway straight as could be. No swaying or bouncing around.
Neat campers. Folds right open and up, canvas stays attached to poles. Poles pop up when you fold it open.

Did you have many steep grades or hills to tow it up? We have an 82 Sea Ray that weighs somewhere around 5500 lbs with trailer and it was a lot to pull up some of the steeper hills. Running 255/85 16 tires which are just a hair taller than standard 33's so that hurts it a bit on the steep grades while towing.
I actually was not there - i think it was not steep anywhere. Not for a long stretch anyway.
Perhaps also check your kickdown cable adjustments.

Spur of the moment camping and fishing with my son. Man it's nice having a sleeping platform. Rain forecasted. Oh well. 
Got the rear springs in. Waiting on the front springs so I started playing with the interior pieces. Hard to fit everything when I need the rear seats...

I have a friend who works with the Sea Scouts and by extension with the local yacht club.
He called me up and asked if he could borrow my rig 'cause someone wanted to donate a 25-foot boat and needed it gone ASAP, and the Sequoia that usually gets pressed into tow service was not available.
I may have convinced him to buy a 100 series.
