Going to do this in a few. Just to be clear, I want to remove the front drive shaft THEN lock the CDL. Or do I lock the CDL BEFORE removing the front drive shaft?
Doesn't really matter but I waited till after. Also, the bolts or the nuts are 'lock'. Search it but 1 shouldn't be turned when initially loosening them (I think it's the nuts, so you want to only spin the bolts). Search to make sure.

Ok. Thanks.

Also, don't forget to mark the d-shafts position!

Yes, saw that on one of the youtube videos. Thanks.

Stupid question, do I have to have the front axle on stands (wheels free) in order to remove the front drive shaft? My buddy borrowed my floor jack and I can't get ahold of him.

You're good. No need to have the front axle up to remove the drive shaft. (2) 14mm wrenches should do it.

Thanks. Will do it tomorrow night after work.

i started hearing a clunking noise, it was very subtle at first, then it got louder. i dont remember forcing the rig in any way. but i do use it for off road every day, i do around 600 miles a month off road, always used it with 4h on dirt. i kept the hubs engaged on lock beacuse it is a pita.
could this have caused it to go. the truck is 1994, with 275000 kms.

Any hard reverse wheeling or pulling, in reverse, someone that was stuck pretty good?

Just so you know, removing the front shaft and the vibe going away doesn't definitively mean it is the front shaft. And vice versa. I know of one person other than myself that removed front shaft, vibe went away, changed front joints, reinstall shaft, and vibration is still there until we replaced the rear joints too. 4wd vs 2wd puts different loads on the shafts during cruising.. or at least that is my theory.

Depending on the orientation of the shaft 1 or two of the xfer end nuts can be hard to get to. Just loosen all of the bottom stuff you can get to, then roll the truck 1/8 tire rotation forward or backward. 1/8 axle turn = 1/2 driveshaft turn, and the previously inaccessible bolts should be staring right at you.

Use a big flathead screwdriver to pry the driveshaft flange away from the pinion/xfer flanges. Once they start moving at all they should pop loose. Try to avoid hammering on them. You MAY need to find the small pocket against the flange that lines up with the axle-end caps and drive something tapered into that to get the DS end to move.

Ok. So been trying to pull the front drive shaft. Can't get the bolt to budge. Used a 14mm wrench on the bolt while having one on the nut. Can't get either to budge. Can I run my impact on the bolt? Or should I soak them with PB Blaster and try again tomorrow night?

yes

affirmative

You won't likely be able to get impact sockets in there but hey, go for it ;)

I soaked it. I can get my impact in there on the bolt. Can I undo the bolt or do I have to undo the nut?
