What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (97 Viewers)

I get that a 40 isn't for every cruiser fan. However, most that I have interacted, as well as my own experience, once you spend some time driving one for a bit of time there is a connection that develops. 40's have a character that most newer vehicles just don't have. No arguing that typical SUA leaf springs aren't gonna ride great, they're noisy, drafty, slow....all of the things you mentioned. There are solutions for those things. In the end a Jeep Wrangler of any type has never, nor will ever have the same character of an FJ40. The fact that a massive number of wranglers are driven by women, and there are very very few women that drive 40s should also tell you something. ;)

I'm with you though, I don't like everything from Toyota, eh...FJCruiser, or from any other brand. So just to be clear, I'm not trying to convince you that your opinion of 40s is wrong. It's fine for you but I'm one that definitely feels differently about them.

Lots of people complain about their 80's being too loud. I can't even imagine what it's like to drive a 40 for more than 50 miles.

Throw a 5 speed in it and put a good stereo in it. Problem solved. Really fun car in my book. If it weren’t for my dads 40 I’m not sure if I would be driving a 80 series it got me hooked

Only way I can explain it is that it is spiritual man. No phone. Just you, the machine, and the road.

I drove my 76 40 from Indy to Dallas by myself. One of the best trips of my life. Not a care in the world.

New rear glass. Haven’t seen it in person yet but my son said it looks “pretty good, much better”.

I love all my Cruisers but when I get to use my 40 I am down right excited. It is the same feeling I got the first time as a kid I rode on a farm tractor, a bulldozer, in a semi, on a train. I couldn't have been happier.

Honestly, my 40 wasn't all that much louder than my 80. 3k rpm at 70mph is loud-ish in both vehicles. I daily drove my 40 for almost 10 years, commuting 60+ miles/day as well as driving it to and from every trail it ever ran. Dozens of 4-5hr trips to Moab and all over Utah. I did trailer it to the Rubicon a few times but other than that it was driven everywhere. Loved every minute of it.

The guy that bought it from me was in his late 60s from San Diego. He flew into SLC to pick it up and immediately hit the road for 24hrs to Houston to see his parents who were ill. He made that trip from SD to Houston several times driving the 40. Some get it, some don't. Granted my 40 was quite a bit more comfortable than a lot of 40s out there.

There should be a “I’m a fawking idiot that sold my 40 and regret it” thread...in the 40 section.

@Box Rocket I think Gas-69 has a lot more character then TLC 40.
40 screams Jeep design. Why not the original in this case?

No point in debating this car, I will never get one. It just jumped at me seeing a lot of people lately get on the bandwagon.

Like I said, some get it, some don't. No worries if it's not one that you are into. Everyone has their "thing".

WTF? I can't see the license plate. Can you repost the original picture?

I didn’t used to care about posting my license plate but I was told there are nefarious individuals, especially in Southern California, that can use the license plate to do unspeakable things!

It's fun. Loud and noisy and hot as hell in the summer. just get sweaty and kick the vents open. Or take the top off and hear nothing but wind. I took mine on many 600 plus mile round trips. And it never failed me once. To this day I still believe that the fj40 is the most dependable and rugged vehicle ever made. Nothing turns more heads than a 40

I am sure people around here would turn their head too, but not in admiration.

And to roll the 80 tech, @S.CarolinaFZJ80 , is that a Subi scoop I see? And is it on top of a supercharger intercooler, like this?

I have only seen a couple of those set ups, and would like to hear how well your IC works.

Pair hell, looks like nice trio!

Good eye on the other LC.

It is an early subaru scoop.
It Is but its an air-to-air & it works great! It is from another mudder in CO. @atoyo1031.
He made a small run of bolt on ICs about 5 years ago.

It really helps with a nice smooth power range. How much it cools the super charged air... I havent a clue as I didn't add pre & post IC temp probes.
It did make a huge difference especially when climbing long grades and towing trailers versus not having it.
