What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (56 Viewers)

Ugh. I had a backcountry site reserved. We climbed up over the first hill with no issues. On the way down from there, there was a Jeep Liberty with a busted trans. The CJ5 "tow truck" twisted a driveshaft trying to pull it out. A JK was there helping him.

After they got the broken down rigs off the trail as far as possible, my 80 wouldn't start. I got my wife to turn the key while I hit the starter with a 2x4. It fired right up.

Long story short, I was overruled on my argument that we should continue on because "I fixed it, didn't I."

2 nights later it did the same thing at McStiff's parking lot in Moab. No amount of lumber persuasion was helping. Before I swapped starters I tried tightening everything and unplugging and re-plugging the connector on the 2-3 month old Mr T starter. It fired right up and has ever since. Fingers crossed!

Dude, I ran across that Liberty on the way up the hill, and then I backed INTO the CJ that was conveniently parked right in the way of the "you must back up the hill" section. My bigass steel bumper gave him a nice new dent too, but if you're going to park your truck in the middle of a tricky section of trail and then leave the thing there with no trace of yourself, I say you deserve it. I didn't have any other way up that obstacle other than to bounce off the CJ's front bumper - they must have been walking out for help when I motored past, the JK wasn't there yet.

Sorry about your trip getting derailed - I can tell you with extreme confidence that the Horsehoof campsite is one of the very best I've ever been to, but also that the Devil's Kitchen campsites have some incredible rocks you can climb right onto for naked sunset yoga or drunken stargazing or any other number of activities you can come up with.

Getting antsy after seeing all of the wheeling pics/vids..

A few weeks ago I went down a rabbit hole, can't even remember why - oh yeah, bumped my rear bumper in a parking lot and had a golf ball sized gash in the plastic. One thing led to another, once my mud flaps were off to fix the bumper I started to looking at fading paint on flares and then noticed the hood losing its clear coat. Oh my! I am cheap so I thought plastidip on flares would tide me over while I pondered whether spray the hood or maybe monstaline black. Decided I might as well paint her. I am going in!

Started here.

Had to remove my Trail Tailor bumper, not so easy as a 1 man job but thanks to some blocks and 2x4, got her off without any damage.

Then to stripping

Then one-man rack removal

Off to Paint!

Wow you did go down a hole.
What color?

Installed my HAM radio in the worst possible spot.

Prepped front of vehicle / frame for BIO bumper.

Prepped rear for 4x4 Labs double swingout.

Cleaned engine in preperation for oil pump cover seal and front crank seal replacement.

What antenna and placement?

I have the Larsen NMO Q-spec in black. (1/4 wave). I cut it to about 19.2" which gave me an SWR of 1.1-1.3 over the entire 2M HAM band. I have it on an L-bracket on the front inner fender. This antenna is great for the city and hilly or heavily forested areas. I also have a Larsen NMO-150 (5/8 wave) on order for flat land extended range. Honestly I like the set up. Was picking up a repeater 27 miles away tonight clear as a bell.

Just got back from a trip with some buddies to the Dollhouse in Canyonlands (via Poison Springs Rd). It was incredible. The dollhouse was sweet but I think the Poison Springs Rd. was my favorite. Most of our group are photographers. We even had a couple do their wedding photos in the dollhouse. This shot was taken just after the wedding ones by my buddy Jarvie who owns the Tacoma in the front.

The land cruiser did GREAT! Was worried but it was probably one of the most capable vehicles in the group. The road to Dollhouse (Flint Trail I think it's called) gets pretty hairy. I never once touched my sliders, while others would just slide along the rocks. Only once I hit underneath. I'm ready for another!

I'll second this. I ground down my sprocket and was able to remove all 4 diff bolts with no slippage or stripping. And this was on a rust-belt rig whose bolts likely hadn't ever been removed (or hadn't for at least the past 10+ years).

WooHoo! Success! Thanks everyone for the help!

Lame post!!! You go to one of the top destination off road areas and you post 1 picture. We need more pics especially harder parts. ;)

Cool you were able to display the power of the rails without any contact.

Inadvertently had a week's 4x4 vacation scheduled in and around Canyonlands the same week as Cruise Moab.
When were you in the Dollhouse? We were there Saturday and Sunday night. So cool!

that bit about grinding the socket is very good indeed, good thought there
