I’m in a bit of a pickle. I have a 1980 FJ40 that is starting to show a bit of age. I have what I believe to be a 2F motor with around 40k original miles that is numbers matching to my truck and runs decent. I live in Colorado about 6500 ft and it causes a lack of power due to the elevation. It has a Weber carb on it. My question is would you swap the 2F for a Cummins in my shoes?

Please don't destroy a beautiful truck with that conversion. Personal opinions of C* aside. If you want a diesel conversion
then dm me and I can find a link to Japanese source for a 13BT or something that's Toyota correct at the very least. But
seriously don't do anything to a mint original FJ40, please. I have my own regrets with my FJ40.

No. You can make your 2F run just fine at 6,500'. I got around Denver with a '73 Aisin carb and an FJ60 big cap dizzy (advanced quite a bit) on a 2F block.

If your 2F has decent compression (at 6500 feet, you'd like to see 115-120 psi), put AFI EFI on it. Mine pulls hard in all gears, starts great, etc. Short of towing trailers (which is sketchy behind a 90" wheelbase vehicle), I have no power issues. Even with 33s, what I now need is an overdrive. I live at 7000'. $20K+ to do a Cummins swap seems absurd.

Let me be really clear my FJ is not mint at all. I was fortunate enough to find one with really low miles on it and pretty much all there. It needs body work for sure and new paint and exhaust. Like everyone these things are a labor of love. It’s not terrible but far from monthly

Ok. Still don’t look for excuse. The guys above gave good answers. Fuel injection has come along ways since I mucked mine up 30 yrs ago.

Have you driven it at a lower elevation to verify that is, in fact, the power problem? In other words, how does it run closer to sea level?
I lived in Nashville 7 years ago and it ran great no issues and the normal power of a 40. I have owned a couple of them and it was good. Here it just seems like a doge and seems to be running very rich….

What engine makes sense for you depends entirely on how you will use the truck, at what speeds and how much tolerance you have to drive at those speeds, or up steep hills at speed.

I live in Tahoe at 6k ft. I wanted to be able to drive anywhere in the area, over 7500-8k passes with sustained uphills, on highways at times, at a comfortable speed with traffic.

An LS swap was my solution and it is everything I hoped for and more.

It's a 40.

The mighty 2F with the right carb tuned right can run like a raped ape.

I run my 40 daily at 3500ft, and every weekend in the winter at 7500ft with absolutely no problem. I'm 100% sure if I was driving regularly at 10K ft it would be a different story. Even my Cummins doesn't like powering over Trail Ridge road, or Independence Pass.

Something about lack of oxygen or something....

Rather than the considerable effort and expense of a motor replacement, I would suggest a swap back to a factory carburetor and see how it works. If later on you decide a different motor is what you prefer, then you’ll have a 2F with OEM carb to sell.

Turbo it!

I vote turbine, you want to fly - maybe something out of a Jet Ranger

Here is a Rolls Royce unit up to 300 shaft HP one that weighs 200#

I'm all about cummins everything, unless it's Mack or Cat! I have a 12V in a 40. But to be honest at this point I can't keep up with @Ol Yeller in the mountains (or anywhere really) with his 2F under any circumstances, I know that much. I'm sure there are many others I couldn't keep up with.

You are selling your truck short, do not swap for an arguably puny underpowered (and not arguably expensive!!!) diesel in that nice of truck, it looks great from what you have shown on here, and the money you don't spend on a swap can make it mint.

I'd bet you could even go ask this in the Hardcore Corner and get the same answers. Go find a true project truck if you want a diesel then do a 606 or a LM2 possibly. Don't devalue that beautiful truck you have.

There's tons of info on here on what carb and tuning to use. If you live there you can tune it for there.

Fix what you have and I think you'll be happy for a long time. Swap it out and I'm almost sure you'll regret it.

Having diesel converted a FJ45 wagon, driven a 13bt 7x series, and currently drive a hd-t 7x series.....

Fuel injection system on 2F.

No carbs and no pre 1990 engine conversions (includes 13BT, 3B, 2H, 12HT). The cummins switch will take you 2x to 3x as long as promised.
