The springs control the rate of opening. The lighter the spring, the faster it opens. Which is why drag racers use a lighter spring, to help it open quicker, to avoid leaning out the carb once the engine sucks the blades open.

That’s correct, but your post made it sound as though the diaphragm was unrelated to engine vacuum and was only involved in closing the secondary.

I wish I had pictures of the 2X4 blocks nailed through the flour AND the seat mounts on the front seats of mine. I think there were a total of 10 of them stacked for the front supports. I know...without pictures it didn't happen!!!!

Flashback! Decades ago I had this cheap-@ss Rastafarian customer who never fixed ANYTHING on his rig until it was COMPLETELY broken.
On one of his truck’s few visits to the shop, I replaced a 2F head gasket that another ‘mechanic’ had installed backwards. When I finished the job and started the truck up to move it, I saw what looked like a spark under the dash.
Investigating, I discovered that the BY ignition wire had been cut under the dash, presumably for a kill switch that had since been removed. The CO, not having a wire nut or better yet solderless terminal to splice the wire back together simply put a small pair of vice grips over the wires to keep them from separating. Every time the vice grips swung and made contact with something, it made a spark.
I handed him the vice grips when he came to pick up the truck.
He didn’t even blink.

^^I'm not great with electrical but know enough to recognize that large black and red wires aren't supposed to touch.
The white and red are reversed in the alternator, the white should go to an idiot light powered from the ignition switch. ??
You got it!! Took me a while to trouble shot that one. I THINK they did it on purpose because the engine wouldn't shut off with it switched around the correct way. Nature of the external VR and ammeter wiring of an FJ40, I've been told. Needed a diode in white wire line to the alternator to stop the back flow of current. Whatever the reason, it should be good to go now! Diode in place, engine shuts off, factory VR on firewall bypassed, and charging at 14.5+ volts when running!
