I would try welding it myself for $100 and I'm not a welder. On the other hand $1000 to have done completely right is a great price

Well, under the category of ‘only thing worse than doing a job is having to do it over’…

I took a job a couple of months ago to rebuild a 4 speed transmission that a customer bought from a well known Landcruiser vendor in the east coast. …

The case was pretty rusty; the gears not so bad. I blasted the gears and deemed them worthy and went ahead and rebuilt the unit. The customer said he would clean and paint the case after. So he does, installs the unit, and it starts leaking.☹️ Upon close inspection he determined that the housing was cracked! He calls me and I have to tell him: never in 40 years have I seen a cracked transmission housing!

He cleaned around the crack, so it’s obvious now.

My best guess is that someone dropped this. Fortunately I have a few extra cases around. Just sad to have to do this job over.
Looks like someone tried to stop drill it so they must have known it was cracked.

They couldn’t even be bothered to put bolts in where the rivets were. FAWK!🤬

I have said elsewhere on the forum that there are three kinds of feasance that you can be held accountable for.
The first is nonfeasance, where you should have done something, but you didn’t.
The second is misfeasance, when you did do something, but didn’t do it correctly.
The third is malfeasance, when you do something wrong AND YOU KNOW ITS WRONG.

That to me is a case of malfeasance.

What’s even worse is that the tangs on the end of the plate aren’t supposed to be visible; they tuck up inside the lower channel of the rear crossmember. SMH

I have to replace my old 4-speed because the case is cracked (it was installed on the truck, who know when). When I was purchasing another one (from the North East Coast), the seller had a few 4-speeds, and two of them was also cracked in exact same place. My guess is that it was left full of water over the winter.

I had no idea a cracked case was even a thing until earlier this year when one of my locals installed a 4 speed that he had purchased from an east coast vendor (who is on the bad seller forum) and then called me to say the case was cracked.

Now that you have posted this, I will be sure to ask when clients bring in 4 speeds purchased elsewhere exactly where they purchased them from.

It appears there's minimal to no penetration of those welds attaching the perch to the frame. Looking at the blurry pics of the rest of the frame, it looks iffy at best. We would like to see more pics of the frame itself.

That to me is a case of malfeasance.
Those look like my welds, ... which is why I go to a professional when it's a safety item.

On the other hand, ... Malcolm might take issue.

Luckely….or not, the back half of the frame needs to be removed due to rust. I have the rear section of the frame to weld in, along with the rear channel and supports to rivet.
