So are there any TRD Superchargers left?

I would bet less than 25.

That seems like a lot. I wonder how many people ordered during the big 4x4 labs group buy earlier this year ? Those bumpers cost nowhere near what this kit will likely cost. In any case I hope this takes off.

cash in hand

If even half that - I always forget, then have to remind myself of the changing demographics of who's buying 80's nowadays versus even 3-5 yrs ago.

Despite my price for mine, I could sell it or not - and really it doesn't matter to me. My whole idea to sell is based on the fact I'll be buying a CNC mill & going self-employed, at the same time buying a new boat & not wanting to have anything on credit/loans.

Back to the reason for posting:

A $3500 S/C kit (price based on near lowest C-Dan sold to us all for), back when many of us floated $20-something or high teens prices for our 80's the S/C @ that price was maybe 15-20% of our purchase price. A couple hundred bucks spent on average wear parts & some little cute parts from American Toyota to help "feed Dan's dogs" wasn't much of an issue.

Fast forward to current day where guys are gun-shy on $2500 80's & you can get a very nice (has near 200k on it) LC/LX for $7500 to say $12k for a top condition one - now that same S/C can be something to the tune of 30-50% of a purchase price, and guys think it's nuts.

Add to that the level of maintenance a forced motor needs/co$ts & the current owners balk at that $3500 entry + motor work to keep a S/C happy. I even had a new member blast me as "irresponsible" when I encouraged another guy about experimenting with a few hundred dollar header. With the new members comes a new facet that to some, the money of a experimental part is a bigger deal than the issue of the part itself performing as advertised.

Good or bad, lots of new owners who buy a $5k 80 aren't going to pony up $3500 (or the $4000+ I'd expect a new batch of supercharger from Mr. T to cost -if at all since they are dropping the program across the board- or if say Sprintex, etc jumps up & develops a kit just to get balked at when they hold fairly close to the $6800 the proposed cost was.

That's going to be the rub, guys who buy a $3500-4000 S/C kit are now plunking down a solid percentage of their 80 purchase price, so to them it may be unreasonable - and for most who could afford a kit when the 80 was still high teen$ for a average one, they already did.

I don't know - really don't expect a big group who really drop $3500 - I think it has far more charm as a NLA item than real demand if it was still in production. That's just my opinion.

Yep everyone talks about how bad they want forced induction I have laid it out in black in white for under $2k they can have all the parts and just need to have a downpipe, intake and charge pipe made and not a single person has done it.

I think there is a "wow I really would love that!" Idea but sometimes life gets in the way of what people want or perhaps even the fact that like you said when you start talking about 50% of the purchase price, people decide that there are better things to spend their money on.

Which is smart but I am just an idiot and think man a $10k engine would make a badass sleeper in that $3k car. Lol

I love the idea and think it's worth the money it would cost. What makes me hesitate is not knowing what "other issues" will be caused by the SC. How will it effect the longevity/reliability of the motor?

It will decrease it. A well maintained and baselined motor it probably won't decrease it to any appreciable degree but anytime you add more stress you remove longevity.

I only paid ~$6500 for my 80. I have well over the purchase price in mods. I don't look at it as a money making investment were each amount spent should have an equal or more increase in value. It's a hobby.

Having a lower buy in price should just free up funds for additional mods.

Its only a matter of time, someone will do it ! I've been looking at that list quite a bit while I've been gathering overtime hours. My current hold off is that I want to understand more about how the systems work as a whole before I start ordering parts. I need to find some good reading on the subject. I've also been looking locally for a good deal on a used turbocharger. Once again, lack of knowledge has me holding off on any purchases. I keep reading up on the turbo threads and the claimed drivability gains are making me want it bad. Planning a trip to CO in September and I have been dreading the long pull up into those mountains. The 1FZ is just such a dog with all the armor and 35's.

I feel the same way. I'm just getting to know the normally aspirated combustion engine better. I feel I need to better wrap my head around forced induction before going turbo, but after having had a few stock turbo'd cars I would LOVE to add one to my 80. I liked the supercharger setup since it's stock and a simple bolt-on (as far as I know). @scottryana any books you would recommend? you seem to have a vast knowledge of the subject

When I bought my blower it was ~10% of the value of the truck. Now they could easily exceed the value of the truck.

I agree. I have a spare 1FZ-FE in the garage to be rebuilt (running). And as Ryan pointed out and I have asked in PM he has detailed everything for a turbo setup and I still haven't got even that far.

They are back....kinda.

I was contacted yesterday by a representative of Magnuson and they are building some kits, under the Magnuson brand, using the old TRD tooling. They will be substantially the same as the originals with the exception of external markings and perhaps a few other minor differences. The price point will be roughly 20% higher than the originals were.

So, those of you that wanted them when they were all gone, put your money where your mouth is.

Any idea if to be sold through Toyota parts or other retailer?

20% more than your discounted price???? Where do you think these will land pricewise?

20% higher than Toyota list price I imagine....

Magnuson is not going to go through all of this trouble to give a discount.... on an engine that is 20 years old.... designed 30 years ago.

This seems like a pay-to-play situation.

A suggested list of somewhere around 4,500 bucks and a discounted price of somewhere around 3,900 bucks, in very round numbers.

From the introduction of the original kit some 15 years ago the price never changed while everything else on the planet went up. I'd say they have some catching up to do, no?

Speed costs money, how fast would you like to go?
