Quiet muffler options? (no tailpipe)

Some of you may recall way back when I replaced my entire exhaust from the manifolds back with a Bosal setup....

Since then, I've had to replace the y-pipe with a Magnaflow unit, gut the secondary cat cause it had clogged up, replace the muffler twice and the tailpipe once more

Last year the second tailpipe rusted away, so I just hacked it off and put a turn down on the muffler (sumthin I should've done from day one)

Now she's in need of yet another muffler as the case is falling apart :bang:

Needless to say, Bosal quality is pure sh!te :meh:

Lookin at options for a replacement :hmm:

I won't be running a tailpipe and plan on using a turndown again.

My main goal is to be as quiet as possible (performance doesn't matter, she'll be a slow turd regardless)

Genuine OEM muffler would be best, but it's far too expensive and I'd rather not go with another Bosal unit only to have it fall apart in another 2 years

Either way, I'd have to hack off the output pipe to add a turndown

I figure I'd just bolt on the biggest universal muffler I can fit, but that means I'll have to weld in an O2 bung

Just curious to see what you guys have used (apart from OEM and OEM replacements)

I thought there was something about the walker BTM mufflers.

I’m running the Walker 4 years now. I think I got it at Summit. It’s quiet and fits perfectly. I’m on the west coast so it will last a good while but, iirc, you run up and down the East coast where winters see road salt so stainless steel might be the best way to go for you.

The main thing for sound is not to go big on the pipe size and go as big as possible on the muffler size. I custom built a 2.5" mandrel bent cat back with a Magnaflow straight thru perforated muffler that's like 3' long, barely fits in the stock location and goes over the axle and dumps at the rear bumper. It can barely be heard at idle and has a decent sound when getting on it, not loud at all.

I've built custom exhaust systems for other vehicles and the same applies, use pipe size appropriate for your power level (charts found online) and get the biggest muffler you can fit. Bonus quiet if you can fit a chambered style and a perforated style together. My Yukon has that and even with headers is pretty quiet and drone free for the family road trips.

Check craigslist for someone who did a cat back system on a full size truck and is selling the muffler. You can often find almost brand new OEM mufflers that will meet your needs.

I run the Walker quite flow. Not same size as stock but close. Easily fits in the stock location. It's pretty quite.

Walker Quite flow SS muffler (summit racing PN WLK-21481)
How long have you run the Walker 21481? Did you use the OEM system behind the muffler or run a straight open pipe? I'm seriously thinking about ordering the Walker today... Thanks!!!

I actually went back to another Bosal muffler and cat

The quality looked to be much better this time around (everything fit without tweaking and the cat was spun instead of flat)

Not as quiet as stock, but no complaints

Sorry been away from the computer for a couple weeks. I've had it on more than three years now and its still going good. I built a custom exhaust from the downpipe back when I added the Walker. It generally follows the factory routing except it passes over the frame instead of under it. You can see what I did in the link in my signature.

I didn't realize how hard it was to find a good quality SS full exhaust for this car until I moved to a state where I'm required to do emissions. Hard to believe that we have to go with such low quality or oem.

I replaced mine with Bosal about 4 years ago and it's literally turning to dust at this point. I agree it's frustrating how low quality some of this stuff is for exhaust on these things. Glad to see the Walker part number. Will add that to my list...

He doesn’t have them on his website anymore, but @OTRAMM used to sell a really nice kit. Link to the thread above.

Thanks for adding this. I reached out to him last week and he said he's not making exhaust anymore because it's so hard to source the materials

You got that part number? I think I saw it on summit racing but all I saw was the muffler

Walker all the way. I run no resonator after the muffler and it's extra quiet.

While you're in there, get some new downpipes, studs and gaskets from the headers as well. This was my list from my semi custom exhaust job.
