The only time she left me stranded was when the AFTER MARKET electronic ignition went haywire. I'm back to points ignition.

My FJ40 "catastrophies"

1. Burnt valve seat. repaired for $200
2. Radiator hose exploded inside the cab. (the one leading from the heater) and I had to be towed off the trail
3. not yet failed but I believe my 3 speed is on its last leg

water pump grenaded itself - steam coming out of the hood vents

yeah, that had to be towed

at least on all of my suspension breaks, I could still drive

in first 24hrs of ownership dropped a valve, mass carnage to piston.

caused by valve retainer failure.

Sat for about 4 weeks while i installed a SBC

First week back on the road blew out a front tire on the highway at about 60mph. Tread literally came off of the inner core.

Ruined a set of boxers that day.

most other issues (inverted springs) are all PO related.

I had i think only 4 occations where i've been left stranded with my cruiser in the 18+ years it's been my DD

1) Winter snow storm died on mass pike..interesting story in itself... electrical
2) ground wire fell on the electric ign....found it after i already had it towed home...i was .7 miles away from home...thanks AAA :)
3) starter exploded...piece wedged in the clutch...no shifty
4) rolled it on the highway at 65 mph

The OEM item that I had problems w/were the drum brakes, leaking wheel cyldrs & frozen adjusters. I trail ride alot so it was a recurring problem. Another is always carry a spare slave cyldr & have a clutch master close by.

Problems!!

The vacuum shift for the 4x4 froze on my 69 in77, and coasted down 40 from Ashville to Old Fort in my 82 when the water pump quit. The 82 also let me down after it flipped four times and landed on its side. I always thought it had cat like reflexes, guess not...
Other than those few times, it's been great.. or maybe the mind only tries to remember the good times.

Driving my father in laws 40' it would stall going up anything greater than 45 degrees. Which always made for a fun backwards ride to a flat starting point.

I got married and my horse went first then the need for a "more practical vehicle" then we ggot a house twenty years later the house is gone and she wants a horse for me and I just got another more fun vehicle &% fj-40 she now say's she should of listened to me in the fisrt place!
