I learned a few things from you as well
GSR to start with. Gear shift removal and seals...Quality advice..!
Is that you in the kiddie pool at 1 o'clock? What happened after the picture was taken? The doll in the horizontal stripes is making a move on you...
Thanks Mike, but I beg to differ... My thread is just the listless meandering of a son of the desert...
I can't speak for Mike, but, if I enjoy living vicariously through others... Gives me things to dream about, study up on and wish I had done when I was younger.
I enjoy life and enjoy visiting with people all over the world... And if its in my thread, it MUST be important
I can speak for Mark... Picking up rocks in the desert isn't always legal, so I'm sure he's picking them up at a stone yard, in a desert area
The real advantage to Mike's thread is his attention to detail, in all his mods... Everything he does is exceptional, to the smallest detail.
I used to be more demanding, but I'm now in a function over form mode... If I have an idea, I develop it as quickly as I can, so I can get back out there and use it... If it ain't the purdiest, that's ok, I still like it.

As far as picking up rocks goes (or anything for that matter) i'm a 'front door' kind of guy. I have made a point at more than one public meeting of mentioning to the BLM (for whom I volunteer) that I collect rocks. No one, from the top down has EVER said a word.
As far as the get-er-done approach to mods, I started trying to instill this in customers starting around 1995, after I had a little bit of perspective on my first resto. When I got my blue LWB 45, I basically took an oath that NOTHING I did to the truck would allow for it being out of commission for more than two weeks. NOTHING. My one exception was swapping the motor, where I gave myself 10 days to do what I could with the engine bay before I started reassembly.
Something about getting older gives more meaning to John Lennon's quip that life is what happens while you're making other plans.
The dark side of competence is that several of my 'temporary' fixes stay in place for many years before the 'real' solution is implemented.
Out in Red Rock back in the '80s, I had a bracket rattle loose on the trail. Lacking the patience to dig up a nut to secure the bolt that hadn't fallen out yet, I secured the bolt by means of a pair of vice grips tucked inside the frame. You can guess where this is going.
I 'found' my missing pair of vice grips about three years later. D'oh.
The wooden camp box on top of the toolbox in the be of my 45 was a provisional idea...in 2007. Lacking a better plan for topping the toolbox, I bought some better planks to legitimize the campbox idea...about five years ago. They are collecting dust in a corner of the living room in the guest house.
The dark side
Along with minimizing downtime, the other thing I've tried to instill in my customers is that if you wait until your truck is ready, you will never go.
