Got my stabilizer in last week. Just a few bends on the kit I already had and we are good. Did some around town driving and it moves right along. Today I drove it to work and I loved every noisy, smelly, bumpy moment of it. Tracks well at 65 mph but the beat up boggers need to go.

Sweet! Can I see what you did for your stabilizer?

I have fj60 axles, so one end bolts to the long relay rod. The other end bolts to the 55 mount on the frame cross member, problem for me the distance is too short for stabilizer, so I'll cut off cross member bracket and move 3 inches.

I am facing similar dilemma on the 55 and the 40, even with stock axles & 60 series PS. I was hoping to avoid the cut and move, but you are right, the distance is too short for any stabilizer I have seen.

Ok so the PO had some slop he was trying bandaid and it looks like he added this stabilizer kit from Summit or Jegs. He had it on the stock drag link in addition to the stock stablizer that mounts from the radiator frame to the (idler arm?) All I did was bend the aftermarket bracket on the axle and the drag link and bought 1.5 inch u bolts to fit the thicker tubes.

I got Friday the 13th'D. I had been driving the doomer around for a few weeks, store runs and took it to work a few times with no issues. Then I had Friday off with my 5 year old and wanted to get a few errands taken care of. First I ran our of gas at autozone. I knew I was getting low but my gauge hadn't even hit the E line. That was a block walk with the little girls hand in one with the holding a gas can.

A while later I stopped at my wife's to drop some valentine stuff off and when I started it up it threw the alt belt off. I had just taken my tool box out for some reason so I had to snag my wife's car to go get my tools. I come back and put the belt on and tighten.

We had one more stop and just before I got there I can hear the belt screaming. I pull into a spot and this time the alt belt jumped backwards and took out the AC belt and twisted the power steering belt.

So I took the belts of and realigned them but left the ac off, it was toast. All this on 90 degree heat and nd into burnt myself on the radiator so many times.

I was able to limp it home without incident driving like a little old man. A very frustrating day to say the least.

I have to really check the alternator alignment and maybe get a deeper v pulley. I might have to fab a tentioner because the belt is real long.

I'll report back later.

I'm just glad, I'm not the only one out there this kind of stuff happens to. I've come to accept this kind of day as normal and appreciate a good day as a gift!

I brought it on myself. I started thinking "this could be a DD if I get a little better gas mileage." I did get in trouble with the Mrs. because I had so much more to get done and my baby heard words she is not used to, especially with such force and frequency.

I'm in hawaii for the week which is great except I miss my 55. I haven't seen one land cruiser, maybe they all rotted by now. I did see a well done 4runner with SAS, but that's it.

Spent time off and on this weekend trying to weed out wiring gremlins. I noticed the when I press the break my parking lights illuminate. I found out while I was changing my tail bulbs and don't know how I didn't know. I thought I fixed it because the tail lights weren't even close to being wired right. The PO had parking lights going to both bulbs and the blinker on the inside bulbs. I got all that right but somewhere up front I'm sending power off the break pedal to the parking lights. I'm running out of wire to snip and check under my dash.

I still haven't solved my fan belt problem, I need some new pulleys for sure.

I'm trying to find the right pulley for my alternator. I needs deep v to keep that bword in. I currently have a 2.5 inch diameter pulley with a 8 inch crank pulley. So check my math and logic:

8/2.5 = 3.2
Alt should turn 3.2 time per revolution of the motor. Suppose 750 rpm at idle (don't have a Tach atm). So at idle my alt is spinning 3.2X750=2400 rpm.

Does that seem a little excessive? At 3k engine my alt is getting close to 10 rpm. Anyway, I was trying to see if I should underdrive a little. I leave the floor to the experts.

10000 rpm, sorry.

I believe a claw-pole alternator has a limit of 18,000 rpm give or take a few 1000 RPM and you are at an alternator speed of 9600 RPM with an engine speed of 3000 RPM with your current pulleys. Compact alternators have a higher speed limit.

Unless you’re having issues with your belt I would say run with it.

Sounds like a story we have all experienced I thought all the bad stuff only happened to me

Thanks for the help. My belt does jump when I hit higher rpms. I made the bracket to relocate my alt and it is lined up really close but I had to use a 51 inch belt and it might be galloping too much. I'm going to add a deeper pulley I just see a lot diameter choices. Maybe it's a band-aid but I have limited options with room and aftermarket AC taking up bolt locations.

A side note about Friday the 13th. Last Friday was also the 13th and my wife forbid me to drive the doomer to work. She is probably right, she usually is.

Wiring!!!! I am still trying to find the reason my dash lights and rear markers lights come on when I press the break. At the same time I replaced the side markers and made sure they were grounded well. So I had been testing the by just pulling the light switch 1 click. Then I pull all the way out and the front markers turn off. Wtf! So I'm thinking the light switch is wired wrong. I'm looking at it I look up a swith diagram on the webernets and it doesn't make sense. Then I see a pic of a switch and it's nothing like my switch. No idea who made it but I do think I'm on to something. If I can figure out where things are supposed to be and what my wires power I might have this silly wire setup licked.

In other news, I ordered a new alt pulley, and I'm going to add a piece to the alt bracket that may aid in keeping the belt from galloping so much. Might also get an idler pulley fab'd in. Happy building!
