That and a clean floor is a mark of professionalism- seems like you've got both there @c2dfj45

I can personally attest to the clean floor. I've been there twice; witnessed said dog lounging around but have yet to even see a dog hair on the floor.

The better test is that you can walk around in white socks and they will be perfectly white when you're done :)

Semi productive day today.....lots of stuff being put together. Finished the fuel pickup assembly....can't really call it a fuel pump any longer.....need to get my head out of the gasser realm.

Fuel pickup tube is about 1/4" off the bottom of our cup

I think it turned out pretty good and will work for us. We use a similar setup on the 40 tanks.....I always try to have an in tank pump on our builds...too many issues with exterior mounted ones from the noise of them to crap getting in them. I have been buying these pretty cool kits with a top plate and the PVC cup.....kind of stole the cup idea for this one.

We're going to put an inline strainer/filter for a Cummins somewhere in near the tank to catch the big stuff and then a Racor up front.

45LV pump kit ....I think it's really cool that it has little terminals for the pass thru for the connectors to the fuel pump wiring. We supply the slide style fuel level sender....those things are great.

I haven't looked at these pics in a while.....no idea what "S" and "P" are designating in this pic. The guy that put this together could never use the standard words that EVERYONE knows and uses....like feed and return or to and from It was always something like this.

We started in on this today.....we have some pretty good work to do to get it to fit. I had a spare 80 series transmission cross member....so we will make one out of two. Kind of letting the kid run with it to see what he comes up with.

Trans mount lines up kind of far back compared to where it was on the FZJ's stock cross member. Not surprising....nothing is in the same position on this truck.

Cut the section out we needed....this was for the HDJ81....same as the FZJ80

Will cut this out tomorrow so the new piece can be carefully welded in.

We cut the studs off one of the mounts we had so we could trace out where it lines up on the crossmember....it looks like it hangs off a lot further off than it really does. I think we'll drop the crossmember down a little bit to give us a little room in the trans tunnel.

Spent a lot of time on the crossmember today.....almost finished it but we had to clean the floors :)

Not exactly thrilled with the way it's turning out but this particular project's goal was to let the kid build it and figure things out on his own. He made a couple of mistakes that he'll learn from and he won't repeat. Tell him once, he never makes the mistake again. It's pretty amazing. Structurally it's way over built....it will have no issues. We are going to have some skid plates on this truck so we'll maybe tie into it.

He'll be doing a lot of grinding on Monday I think :)

My on-going project for the last 3 days has been trying to get the Second Skin Audio Luxury Liner Pro installed. There's a lot of measuring, cutting, trimming and other nonsense to make it all fit. The shop has been crazy busy so it's been challenging to concentrate on things. Pretty much got it all in and down. It's great stuff.

The aluminum tape seems to be the only thing that really sticks to the rubber surface....it has to be cleaned very well though. The goal of this stuff, mass loaded vinyl(weighs 1 pound per square foot!) is to cover up EVERYTHING...no gaps.

A lot of the cars we take apart have this in it......it's usually molded into the carpets. Mass loaded vinyl keeps sound waves from passing thru it. Supposedly when using it with other sound deadeners, you can get a 95% reduction in sound pressure and a 2/3 reduction in perceived sound you hear. The #2 truck has this in it and that truck is super quiet and tight inside.

I'm going to spend some time focusing on the shifter area....really going to piece it together around the shifters...

Folded up vinyl floor mat? Perfect bed for the dog.

Word on the street is.....this harness will be going into the truck on Monday or Tuesday. It's come a LONG way since we pulled it out a few weeks ago. Hard to believe how much cleaner and nicer it is. We will have to find homes for some of the modules....we lost a few but gained a couple (glow plug relay box and the ECU for my gauges).

I lucked out with my tech Taylor and his ability to do this type of work. This will go in and have no issues. Just like factory but not even close :)

Working on parts for the lift next. They seem about the same height in this pic but that nose of the camper truck will come down quickly once things start going into the engine compartment. Was about 4" lower to start and that was with the 1FZ.

That’s an interesting photo. At first glance and based on the hoods the trucks appear to be the same height. However if you look at the frame horns on #1 and the ARB brushbar on #2, the truck on the right looks considerably taller.

I had to do a double take after I took that pic. It's very easy to see the height difference when you stand perfectly square to them...and they are parked nose to nose. The #2 is at a slight angle in that pic.

We'll have all that corrected soon enough :)

Put in some Saturday hours.....trying to make sure we get this truck done for the 70 Series meet and greet in about 1 month. I'm not a deadline guy so we'll see.

I wanted to spend some time with the gauge cluster...it's a tad complex to get it how I want it. I can't seem to find an oak dash with the cutout for the accessory option(gauge pod)....I could get a grey and dye it but I figured I'd give this a shot first. I would like to double stick tape this thing down to my existing dash pad and run the ribbon cable for the OLED gauges under the pad and down into the dash. No holes and fully reversible should I not want to run it. Can't imagine that will be the case but who know.

Started with some cardboard and made a template.....I want to make sure it uses the existing screws on the sides like factory. Obviously gutted the OEM altimeter or whatever this gauge had in it.

Transfered to 1/8" aluminum sheet

Cut out

20200815_163042.jpeg

Whiskey bent and ready for install. I had to ace a couple of the tabs I thought I could get to go into the factory clips in the housing but they were too thick in 1/8"
20200815_184328.jpeg

Some grinding and fiddling around with(a lot of fiddling around) and it was in BUT....

20200815_184239.jpeg

The OEM gauge pod sits down into the dash pads...it's moulded to fit it. When you place it on the dash it sits too high....there is a big gap at the back where it meets the metal dash. Broke out the grinders and sanders and did some work.

Got it really close.....this was well over 3/8" when I started. Filthy windshield.

Sides are very tight

20200815_183830.jpeg

Gauge will be a real pain in the ass to cut into the aluminum....it has 2 small curves at the bottom of it which will have to be hand filed.

20200815_183904.jpeg

Put on a couple of squares of double stick to check it out how it did.....stuckl very well. We'll use some 3M and prep everything so it sticks and holds up in the sun. Tricky to get it just right so the thickness of the double stick tape doesn't lift it off the dash pad.

Not thrilled with the open spot on the right side of the gauge....not sure I want to center the rectangle gauge either. Need to think that out. Kind of want to cut it in tomorrow....when I can concentrate 1000% on that opening.

20200815_184514.jpeg

Thought about stealing the pad from my 73 and dyeing it but that seemed dumb. I should have probably cut the pad I have on the truck which would have meant modifying the guts of the pod to fit the gauge display. Probably the same amount of work either way I did it. For some dumb reason I feel better about not cutting the dash pad.

Good to know it can be done....I was worried about there being an issue cutting.

Got the gauge display cut in....broke the aluminum panel from its base though :(

We willl weld it tomorrow which is good...it needed to be welded so the bottom edge can be finished so it's not seen.

That stereo screen takes up a LOT of room

Tried to take this one from where I sit....lots of visibility and I will be able to access the AC panel below.
