Let's paint the rear bumper white or make the front one black again.
It reminds me of a '73 Corvette :)

And today.....we FINALLY started putting our Cross Country 4x4 top mount intercooler on. Super exciting......had a quiet day between jobs so I figured we had better get this on so the truck can hit the road at some point.

I had sent the intercooler out to have a ceramic heat barrier coating put on it....the coatings guy says a 15* temp drop is pretty common with this product on intercoolers and radiators....seems like a no brainer to me to put on it.

Started by laying out the support bracket....we knew we were going to have to relocate the hot water heat exchanger for sure.

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Trust me....I think about this WAY too much. White rear bumper would be super cool I think.

Kind of leaving out a few minor steps here and there......so far everything has fit pretty well. Cross Country built this based on a V8 truck they had......we went back and forth with measurements on a few things but for the most part, they got it really right.

Really cool inlet adapter for the manifold

These intercoolers have a fan under them.....It comes on with the ignition. I'm not so sure we will run ours like this. I've read a few things about these fans crapping out....some guys have installed temp switches to kick them on. My SwitchPros is right next to the fan area....we may wire it to be controlled thru the SwitchPros....I'd like the option to turn off the fan if I've got the key on or the truck is running at speed on the interstate. Kind of pointless to have a fan on for hours and hours. We'll see.

We had to blow out one of the mounting holes on the frame a little to get the hardware in. Not a big deal.

Here she is......pretty slick. This thing is BIG.

The OEM intercooler ducting is shifted off to the side left side of the truck. For the life of me, I could not figure out how these guys were going to make an intercooler shifted over to line up with the hood ducting. Apparently for the better part of a year and a half while I was patiently waiting for this, I never realized that they would just supply new duct work. Not so proud of that. Guess the guys in Australia are pretty smart :)

Factory duct work

Cross Country supplied duct work

To install it, we had to remove the OEM piece....held in by clips. 2 new holes are required to be drilled to install.

Also had to trim the corners of the hood insulator to fit it flush. Pulled the liner for that and cut it off the truck. Really thick insulator on this....almost like a wood backed piece or something.

Unfortunately, a few things weren't exactly perfect with kit and we'll have to address them. We're going to need to come up with a 2.25" 90* bend to get us from the outlet of the IC to the inlet of the intake. Looks like Cross Country got the length wrong by about 6". We'll do a temporary setup until we can get some 2.25" tubing in.

The inlet to the intake is fed by a series of silicone and aluminum bends under the IC and up behind the IC. Kind of a cool setup.

Outlet of the turbo to the inlet of the IC......no issues here, fit right on.

Here she is in all her glory.....the KC underhood LED lights really set the mood :)

Finished up with the IC on Friday.....needed a small "intermediate coupler" as I'm going to call it :)

For another project I had bought a Woodward fab bead roller and added a tube beading die set for making beads on IC piping .....got to use it for this little job. Looks like it came with the kit :)

Here's how all this routes....

I was concerned that there was going to be an issue with getting to the trans dipstick....and to a lesser extent the oil dipstick....neither turned out to be an issue. There is enough room to pull the dipsticks out and get to them. Not exactly like using them without an IC in the way but nothing to worry about either.

Judging by how our IC fits to the scoop's ducting, we must have this motor placed exactly as if it came from the factory.....body is too. I was fearful that we were going to be off but apparently not. The duct sits perfectly on the top of the IC.

Tight fit for the heat exchanger but we got it in there. The DPF hood has a huge amount of clearance right above this guy.

20220603_153721.jpeg

I did a couple of quick drives around on Friday......saw a max of about 990F degrees EGT.....I could easily see 1200F to 1250F before with this same type of drive. I bet max EGT will be under 1100 F once I really get it out and give it the foot. Boost came down a little bit to about 20psi with the IC installed.....going to give the boost controller a few cranks to get it back to around 24psi.

This rig was even more stunning in person! Thanks Chris for showing me the projects and look forward to learning about the Caswell electro plating. What an amazing shop, and your quality and vision is amazing.

here is a link to my 45 project using a 79 series bed..

Glad we were able to meet face to face finally :) and super glad I could show you around what we do here.

The Caswell stuff is great....little bit of a learning curve but when you get it, like I was telling you, it's magical. Well to me it's magical.....I must be easily impressed. I'll be happy to walk you thru the process. That kit I showed you was the 1.5 gallon kit. I'd probably step up to the 3 gallon kit....never thought I'd be running as much stuff thru it as I have.

Vera.....now I remember. Quite the project!

Haven’t updated this in a long time.....not much to update I suppose. Old #1 has been doing its thing.....ready for some winter camping hopefully.

Updated my head unit in the rig.....with a neat little mod. Not sure we came up with it but we built a little rotary dial volume control knob as this particular Android unit doesn’t have any volume control on it except for a slider somewhere on the screen. Guess I’ve officially become old......I’ve got to have a knob for the volume....unless I have steering wheel controls.

Went with a 10.1” Joying Android head unit this time....we’ve been doing a fair amount of Android head units in 100 series trucks and some of our other builds. They’re cool. I had a Sony XAV-AX8000 in the truck that I have hated since day one(poor screen quality was my biggest gripe).

The Android is setup is really nice, I especially like the equalizer and sound field stuff. Sounds really good.

Here is what I had.....

For the volume control stuff, we got it all from Amazon. The core part is an Arduino board. Had to do some kind of programming with code and all that....not my department. I just come around when it’s all working. Ha. Pretty sure this would work with any system that has programmable steering wheel controls. Volume up, down and even a push to mute. Super cool.

The Android is a single din chassis which is what the Sony was....makes it nice to hide some of the components to make it all work. The volume control takes USB power so we added a little box for that behind the unit.

Here’s the volume control in action

Took a trip up to NC to play around with some old trucks way back in April.....fun stuff. What a good time. Great group up there that puts the Relic Run on. Can’t wait for next year.

Thanks for the details on the volume control! Any chance you'll do a build thread on your RV project?

I’m contemplating making an assembled kit to sell. I tried to buy one but couldn’t find one.....so we made one :)

Ah.....the RV project. I’m taking TONS of pics....so maybe we’ll do a thread one day.

This will give you an idea of what I’m doing........we put the Chinook camper on my 79 #2 for ‘proof of concept’....it’s proceeded much further by now :)

Current state of the body...it’s taken a long time to get to this point.
