If you go to Holister Hills in an 80 series Never, NEVER follow a bunch of guys in full width SAS exo cage 4Runners... as @jcardona1 has warned before not to do the Jungle trail at Holister in an 80... well it looked OK at the begining & it was not marked. I didn't know it was the Jungle Trail, but once your in the trench you can't get out. So as the trail progressed it got narrow & more rutted

Haha nice pics! And nice scars. I did jungle trail. Not to too bad, very to lay it on its side against the walls though. It's Tank Trap you wanna stay away from!

It's 105° on bloomin June 1st UGG!
Well, have you ever not wanted to do something, but you gotta?
I have 3 trips planned this month & I blew a Birfield in my local creek here near my house.
So here we go....
Thanks to @ToyotaDon he had some spare parts to get me out of my delima.
I owe Don bigtime... thanks.

so did you have the wheel turned when you blew the birf? :) Thats the only way to break one!

Well, i guess i need to tell the story.
Yep, Elocked front & rear, driver side tire completely stuffed in fender touching front top & firewall at full lock to left on two tires climbing some sand ditch... what was I thinking? Oh yeah, full air preasure. Another thing the axle seal just started leaking about a month ago & when I got in there it was just soup in there... I'm sure this wasn't good for the birfield either.

Now that I just got this apart, this might be a full rebuild rather than a quick birfield field replacement. The birfield inner cage is destroyed.

At this very moment I'm trying to figure what this un expected thing is in my axle housing. I didn't see this in any of the axle rebuild videos & I don't have a factory manual. Any guesses?

Also I'm thinking I need to go ahead & replace the bearing since it's got a gouge in it.

Yeah, silly birfield slash axle rebuild action coming to you live... stay tuned.

Huh. So it just broke in that scenario? No throttle or anything crazy?

Maybe it was just it's time.

Dang! No bueno!

Just enough gas to get the tire to turn.
Well, I was flexing to cut my flares out of they way. Here was the pass. side action.
Also I heard it clicking once at full lock when I was at Pismo last month.

Check your bumpstops. I doubt your birfield just died and blew apart if the tire was free to roll. I am sure it was bound up in the fender in some way.

The thing inside your axle is kind of a guide to get the axle shaft to slide in. It was tacked inside the tube but a lot of guys have seem them break the tack and floating around like yours. Most usually end up cutting it out as I think it's too hard to get back in and get it welded.

From the pictures on my phone, it looked like an old seal. Your explanation makes sense.

Alright, I just got back from Marlin Crawler in Fresno to get a rebuild kit with bearings. I need do it correctly rather than a cheap quick & dirty birfield replacment. Besides my outer bearings are looking burnt brown.

What ever it is... its not in there anymore.

Isn't there a seal that sits inside the axle tube that can sometimes fall and need putting back in place?

"Shine a flashlight into the axle housing and look around. There should be nothing visible loose in the

housing and there should be an index ring about 2 inches from the oil seal flush against the inner lip

of the machined surface (it may look like part of the housing). This ring can occasionally come

loose. If it has it will likely be lying in the housing and you will need to reseat it"

From those previous posts though maybe all is well without it?

I dont think removing the ring hurts anything other then making it a little more difficult to seat the axle after your rebuild.

Well, you three that posted are correct.
In the axle rebuild FAQ it's plain as day.
Now that it's out im wondering how im going to get the axle in with out damaging the seal? Hmm?:hmm: Some folks learn the hard way...
Here is a copy snip from FAQ:
Pic below is a good view of the index ring inside the axle tube:

I didn't get it all in last night. It took way longer than I thought to clean parts.
I'm just ready to slide in the axle. The C clip gave me some fits...

The messed up thing is I'm scheduled to leave today to go camping. Im just here at work burning day light spinning my wheels.
I just need get a can of Get-R-Done opened & Get it Done when I get home.:wrench:
