With 35s it's possible to get unrestricted travel without trimming, but with 37s it's a must if you want to stay low COG. A 3" suspension & 1" body lift totaling 4" of lift.

With doing a lot of research most rigs with 37s are running lifts that are 2" to 3" taller (5" or 6" of lift) then spacing down the bumpstops 2" to 3". This gives about 4" of uptravel. If I go back to stock bumps up front I will get my 4.5" of shock uptravel back. I am willing to cut & if I do it correctly most will not even notice that I have cut the fenders. Adding .5" more body is a option, but I want to do all this with only 4" of lift.

Look at @Apounder he is running a 850J/863 suspension (3.5" lift), 14" shocks, no body lift, cut fenders & 4Ds... his rig has custom bumps, so I don't know how much uptravel he has, but it is a slick & sick set up. I would like to know what his belly height is with those 4Ds...

But my goal is to get what I had with the 35s. Here is a pics of my rig on the same stump with 35s & 37s. See how my hood is almost flat. My goal is to get back to a flat hood.

New OME 862 rear dual rate springs

I have been looking for a more versatile spring that will perform the ability to have a plush ride while empty, but have firm stability when loaded down on family trips. The OME 860 coils I had gave a big stinkbug while DDing around town empty then when loaded with only kids, Ice chest & misc. items it would start to squat.

After doing a lot of research I learned of springs that have two spring ratings rather than one, they call them dual rate. It turns out Old Man Emu has two to that will fit the 80 series. The 866 would be way to firm for my needs having a rating of 240/300 lbs. The other is the 862 with a rating of 170/260. 170lb. is the factory spec for the 80 series & 250lb. rate is what OME uses for the heavy 863 spring.

What does this mean?
A 170/260 lb. rating means plush/firm.
Now that I have broke them in a bit loaded & empty, they are just what I wanted. They have helped Lexi450 have even better turning manners. I can feel the plush 170lb. rate while empty, they feel very nice. When I make fast hard turns I can feel them set into the firmer 260lb. rate & it turns like it's on rails. I can't be happer.

To note: these are considered to be stock height replacement springs that gives approximately 1" lift over stock. To achieve a 2" lift I added 30mm to them giving a final center hub to bottom of flare of 22" after minus of 1" for my body lift (Stock is approx. 20").

If only OME would only add one more turn & .5mm thicker wire to the 862 it would increase lift by 1" like they do to the 850 & 850J. They could call it an 862J.... Hmmmm, just having fun.

It's level with 300 to 400 pounds in rear for test run.

I know you're the guy to ask about this. I'm planning on getting 862's plus a spacer to lower my rear end (currently have 863 as far as I can tell). I know you already had your BL on when you fitted them, but do you feel this setup would work well with 315's and no body lift? I don't mind a little rubbing as long as it's not the kind of rubbing that will shred my tires :D Thanks for your painstaking research--If my wife were a truck person, she would be you. Over-analytical in my mind, but I'll gladly benefit from other people's research :hillbilly:

They are great but I would do the rear 50mm Slinkies if you can swing it. By the time you buy spacers & springs your getting close to the same price.

35s/315s in rear will need a 2" frame bump spacer. I ran an a 1.25" & 1" body & worked perfectly.

Yes I'm very anal... I ask myself all the time why I do this stuff & post pics, measure, post pics, measure........ I wish I had more time to wheel more than just Web wheel. My turn is coming...

I'm not sure I completely understand this comment. What do you mean by 2" frame spacer? I was planning on a 30mm spring spacer, and I'm definitely not doing a body lift. Would be open to lowering bump stops, but hoping it's not really necessary (you tell me?). I'd also be open to the slinkies, but wouldn't that net me about the same as the 862's and a 30mm spring spacer? I like the OME route because I can go pick it up from the local offroad shop (slee) and skip shipping :)

I think he meant a 2" spacer for the bumpstop that is mounted to the frame?

Cool your close to Slee.
I think Redline is close also to you.
The 2" frame spacer is a bumpstop spacer. I just did some up the page with pics of course... cant help it. I'm a picture guy that likes to measure everthing.
I believe the 862s +30mm will be 1.5" shorter than 863s. My center hub to bottom of flare is at 23" with the body lift. I did put a 10mm packer on driver side because I have my inside spare on the driver side. Did I answer everything?

Bump stop spacer, got it! Thanks for the info, much appreciated. If I come up with any further questions, I'll PM you so as not to clog up your build thread :hillbilly:

It's ok, it's good for historical purpose. I'm glad people are leaning about the benefits of dual rate coils.

Cutting the front fenders.

The latest project has been to remove the 1.5" bump stop pucks that I recently had to install after putting on the 37"s. I trimmed 2" up from the bottom & cut some relief slits on the inner fender to open up it up wider.

I love the hack saw blade hack for the air saw!

I took out the 1.5" bump stop pucks after cutting front fenders & got back 3" of uptravel. I went out on the same old stump to compair. It's definitely stuffed in there. Cutting was worth the effort. Sway bar is disco'd.

I didn't quite make it to a flat hood like the 35"s but close.

Anything rubbing on that front stuff? Sway disconnected? Looks good!

Yeah sway bar is disco'd, it's rubbing evewhere, even the top.
I need to add some bump stop pucks back in there .5"?
It won't rub as bad with the sway bar on because it restricts travel.

I have been looking for a 37" spare on Craigslist but to no avail. Finally after talking with @jtwopark he offered me three for free. He likes those Yokohama Geolander tires... they are a light tire. My used one is 66 pounds. Nice looking tire. Thanks @jtwopark .

Daddy Went Wheelin

Daddy went wheelin with his girls last weekend.
I took vacation days off months ago for this trip & last week it seemed like it wasn't going to happen, but at the last minute it all lined up for us to go.
We went on a day trip 2.5 hours North to Holister Hills SVRA the event was the Molina Ghost Run. We arrived late but caught up with some work buddies mid day.
If you go to Holister Hills in an 80 series Never, NEVER follow a bunch of guys in full width SAS exo cage 4Runners... as @jcardona1 has warned before not to do the Jungle trail at Holister in an 80... well it looked OK at the begining & it was not marked. I didn't know it was the Jungle Trail, but once your in the trench you can't get out. So as the trail progressed it got narrow & more rutted. My girls were scared stiff & wanted out, so was I.

Long story short the Lx made it through thanks to 4 friends standing on my sliders but not without some battle wounds due to the trench warfare it went through. The damage should of been way worse than it is , I'm very fortunate.

All together it was a great day & I was very impressed with how well my 80 wheels. The 80 series is a truly a great family haulin machine. It runs for hours smoothly down the freeway to get you there then takes a beating & gets you all the way back home with no complaints.
Here is more pics & a video.
