Rolling the rig backwards by hand (pushing it with the wheels on the ground) will pop that pinion out of there like Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day! :D

OK!!! That was my theory is the ring gear pulled it in a bit. I'm parked on an uphill slope so that should be no problem. Thanks!

Now if the Florida monsoon would stop that would be just great!

This works well, but be careful, you don't want the pinion to fall farther into the diff.

I've gotten away with pulling the flange off, then threading the nut onto the pinion enough to be able to pull it back out. Once the pinion is pulled out, slide the flange on, being careful to not push it in farther. If the flange is a press fit onto the pinion (sometimes they are, sometimes not) then you will need to put pressure on the pinion with the axle shafts (via spinning a wheel or rolling the truck back) and then trying again.

Failing that, the diff has to come out again to seat the flange and start the nut. Once the diff is reinstalled, you can then apply proper torque (if you can't do that on the workbench).

That worked in getting the pinion out, and nut (with no washer) is on. Next issue, factory spec says 180-350, so I used my 4:1 torque multiplier and torqued it to 70, which multiplied by 4 is 280. I put some red Loctite on as well. Before I stake it, it feels hard to turn the pinion the few degrees of backlash, did I over tighten the nut? First try it was really hard, but I could move it, then I rolled the truck forwards a few feet and it got a LITTLE looser, will it just loosed up on its own or will I break something?

Bump?

AHHH...did you replace the crush sleeve yet or swap in a solid spacer? If not, then you're too tight, most likely. the preload is specd to 180-350 for a NEW crush sleeve- this is the torque needed to "crush" the sleeve. Once the sleeve has been crushed, applying too much preload is bad, unkay? if you're dealing with fixing a used, previously running diff, then you just need to seat the nut to the flange enough to keep out any axial end play. look at the threads where guys have loose pinion flanges...

solid spacers are the only way to go...

I thought all FJ62's had solid spacers?

Either way I just need to back off on the torque a bit?

eph...I think so...but don't back it off so far there is play...if the crush sleeve gets overcrushed, it needs to be replaced...at that point, with the solid spacer...solid spacer requires set-up and shimming, but once done, is torque to spec for solid spacer and forget about it.,the solid spacers were on earlier diffs, fj60, on, got crush sleeves FWIU...

Eh I got it back off with the air impact and retightened it, just not as much, maybe 230 ft-lbs. the backlash is back but not the wrong play. All good!

how's that diff?

Got another used driveshaft and now I have no vibrations, rechecked pinion and no play so it's holding I guess.

Made a garage upgrade

AIR CONDITIONING!!!!!!!

jebus. Those holes in the wall are gnarly.

Going to cover them up with grates? Looks like 100% concrete, I see some rebar in there.

Yeah we'll get some grilles that won't look so obtrusive.

It's nice and chilly in there now, too bad there's still no room to work on on a Cruiser in there :(

Sounds like you need to sell whatever is taking up garage space that isn't another Landcruiser!

How's the 62 been doing?

Just hit 1000 miles on this motor. Took a hundred mile trip to the beach for the weekend to help a club member wrench on his 80. Heading to Steve (FL Cruiser) house tomorrow for the festivities. I'm excited to see the legendary original Battlewagon again. I'll post some pics.

He probably has it under a tarp in a warehouse :( we'll see though.

hey...nice job on the build:cool:. the cruiser is looking good. how was the axle width in the rear compared to the front, while using the spacers? looks kinda the same,it came out nice. also how is your braking power with the new disc brakes compared to the old drums? just curious, i'm looking to do this in the future but not sure if i can tackle it. so i'm trying to get more info before i decide to go for it :meh: . thanks for the build thread:cheers:
