Okay back to business. I'm slow I know.

Got the motor on the stand. What a mess. It's an 84 supposedly with 275k on it.

image-2934227515.webp

What a mess. But it's not what is on the outside that counts.

image-3132012246.webp

Yanked the head and immediately found out what was wrong with the motor. Blown head gasket.

image-1726136737.webp

Between 1-2

image-1388772605.webp

This is where it got interesting. A motor that has 275k on it should have a good size ridge at the top or oversize pistons. No ridge at the top. Pistons are standard size and the bore specs out. So my assumption is that there is no way this motor had 275k on it. Maybe 75-125k. Bearing we're all in pretty good shape as well. Cam looks almost brand new.

But boy was it ever caked in oil and mud. I had to wash my tools after I stripped this mess down.

image-3449641079.webp

There was also a good bit of sludge in the motor.

Upon draining the oil I had a good gallon of water come out before the oil.

You can see how deep the crap was on the pan after I scraped a layer off

Speaking of widened Stockton wheels, does anyone know of a source for them anymore? Short of that, does anyone of a way to weld hubcap tines onto Sunraysia wheels?

Then I yanked the cooling system apart

image-311105576.webp

Every hose had swelled from being coated in oil so long.

The cooling system was a mess.

This turd is what flowed out of the block drain. Amazingly the drain wasn't plugged.

This is what the crank keyway should look like

image-3553078303.webp

I forgot a out this bearing. It was the only one that was bad. Kind of an important one as its the thrust bearing for the crank. The crank was walking all around in the block.

All disassembled

And on its way to the machine shop.

Hi,

Are there plans to improve the 2F through the rebuild? I'd be interested if you are going to shave the head, grind the cam, etc... I've got a '87 2F sitting in the garage I need to rebuild and need some ideas about what works well and what parts are getting hard to source. Is getting the rebuild parts from SOR a good way to go or just letting the machine shop do it? If you're using the machine shop to source parts, what parts will they get for you?

Thanks!

Finally found a set of 1mm or .040 oversize pistons for it. I wanted to go big without hurting reliability. I think I have some of the last pistons in the US. Was quite a task hunting these puppies down.

Got all the gaskets a seals from Lowe Toyota. All the powder coating will be done by Smoking Gun. Nothing real wild but it will be one of those motors you could eat off of. I plan on doing some mild port work as well. Rotating assembly goes next week to be balanced.

All the nuts and bolts and misc hardware is getting dipped in Trivalent Black. Similar to plating but its a new process that matches the black Toyota uses now on their nuts and bolts.

Block and head back from the machine shop.

Crank, flywheel, connecting rods, pistons, pressure plate, and crank pulley were balanced at another machine shop. As was polished.

The engine compartment was a mess so it's getting a makeover as well. Wiring harness is coming out and having the fat cut out and some beef put in.

image-1664376634.webp

Much better.

image-3961513944.webp

He was a very lucky man. No bolt holding the splines together on the Saginaw steering shaft.

image-3170590786.webp

Parts to be powder coated by Smoking Gun (ACC).

image-3371677781.webp

More parts.

image-2238723291.webp

Parts getting cobalt plated they will all be black.

These guys don't mess around. Plus they are a cruiser shop and know what needs to be covered up and what doesn't. I told Brian to keep it classy and that was about it. My next motor I do with them won't be so tame.
