Best U-joint for fj40 (2 Viewers)

Broke a U-joint yesterday was wondering what the best joint to replace with. Going to replace all 4 at the same time and wanted to get the strongest joint the first time rather than doing the job more again and again.

My rig is a 1969 with stock trans and transfer case.

The stock one from Toyota. There are a few dealerships that will give a substantial discount for ih8mud members. Lowe Toyota is one, American Toyota in NM is another.

I second Eddy, but I understand the OEM joint from the dealership is very pricey too. Rock Auto has the best price on U-joints and comparing an OEM joint to their joint shows them to be identical and the bearings are the exact same size and thickness so if the 109 plus dollars for an OEM joint is too much in this economy (call Cruiser Dan by the way)' Rock Auto is the way to go. Had the joint in two days.
 
Yeah, if the toyota joints are 100$ I will not be going that direction.

The Moog joints from rock auto are 18$ thats prolly what i will buy.

What about spicer? Better than Moog?- what about prices?
 
Hi All:

If the OE Toyota u-joints are too pricey for your wallet, there are other good quality u-joints available.

Watch out for cheap junk though. Spicer is a name-brand part, so should be decent. I would look for Japanese-made u-joints, from companies like Koyo, Mitsubishi, or Joint Fuji.

I have Joint Fuji TRE's and they seem to be quality parts.

If you buy cheap ones, but a spare and carry tools to change them.

It is very hard to change Toyota ujoints with the old socket and hammer trick. It helps with a Ujoint tool. They are a lot harder to do than a domestic joint in the field. You do not want that.

Even then it probably won't work. Many of the guys that have been working on 40s since before the Internet will tell you that you are more likely to damage the joint using a hammer instead of a ujoint press. The OP should rent the tool or take Ito the dealer/driveline shop. Hell, I had to cut out the caps jut to get mine off.

I agree....I would never want to do that again. it took for ever. from now on, it's going to the drive shaft shop- worth every penny.
 
I'd go with cruiser outfitters. Worth the extra few bucks to put back into the cruiser community.

Neapco U joints don't fit right. The caps are undersize for the bores in the yokes.

x-2 on the Neapco. I replaced a set of 60 u-joints with 275,000 miles on them with
Neapco. They were toast in 32,000 miles. OEM seems to be the best but the other Japanese mfgs are a close second. Many times the Beck-Arnley are repackaged OEM. I've never found a Beck-Arnley that was junk
 
Does anyone have much experience with fjparts.com?

I've had great service from Cruiser Outfitters - absolutely no complaints.

I've also purchased a few items from fjparts.com (couple years back). I was completely satisfied with their service. It's a one man business and the owner answers the phone when you call. Can't remember the guys name but he gave me straight forward answers to all my questions and there were no surprises when the stuff arrived.
