Power steering

Working on the poser steering right now. When I got the 55 it had a Saginaw box mounted inside the driver side frame rail in front of the front crossmember- like hundreds of 40's I've seen. This would probably have worked OK with a 2F engine but in this case the steering shaft rubbed against the driver side exhaust manifold. The shaft already had two universal joints between the firewall and steering box- I thought about adding another along with a support bearing (like the PTO driveshafts have) but didn't want three joints in the shaft.
The ugly green 55 I recently bought for parts from jeff Dozier had a Scout (I think they're made by Saginaw anyway) box mounted on the outside of the frame rail. Hmmmm The box looked pretty new, decided to use it on my truck. Cut a plate from 3/4" steel after making up a cardboard template, located the steering box on it and then drilled and tapped the plate for 7/16"-20 fine thread bolts. Have the plate clamped to the frame ready to be welded, when that's done I can install the box and the shaft from the gree 55. I'll need to make up an arm from the pitman to the pass side of the tie rod, gonna make one up from an original tie rod end (tie rid end) and the DOT tube that was on the green truck. That one has a threaded heim end. Should work out fine.

Funny that the PS worked fine - I put almost 800 miles on the 55 with the steering shaft rubbing on the manifold. I didn't liie it though and couldn't live with it like that. Only real problem was with the bent relay rod I couldn't turn the wheels all the way to the right against the knuckle stops! Will get some pictures posted. Gary

Yup. Scout box is the only Saginaw box with the forward facing Pitman arm. I (and others) consider it the best box for a Pig...

Have to bring a gas welder home from work to weld the plate to the side of the frame- see photo. Scout box has been cleaned and painted and steering shaft is ready that's it sitting on the valance I saved from my old piggy! After the plate is welded in the box and shaft should be a bolt in installation.
Pighead- what did you do for the shock tower? I'll need to address that when the new box is in place. My plate is 3/4" steel so I should be able to weld a hoop to it for the shock top mount. Gary S

Just realized I never followed up with the shock tower. We made one up and welded it on to the plate

on which the Scout box is mounted. came out fine. Prett happy with both the appearance and the functionality of the install. And- the rear window is now working just fine, from the dash switch anyway. The key switch is tight and I am afraid to force it to turn. If I finf the ambition I'd like to remove the switch, disassemble and clean it to see if I can get it to work. For now having the dash switch is sufficient. The project for using the remote got put aside for the time being. Gary

Well at least I won't be the only pig at the pig run. Congrats on your new ride.

Sleeping. It's sleeping. On its side.

That's the only explanation because it's hard to fathom it rolled up the hill. I cant figure out how it got there from its surroundings.

Driver didn't see stump. Hmmm. Still, it's kinda surprising- to me at least-that this would put it over at low speeds. Tall piggies are really tippy.

Frankly I'd driven up that trail numerous times and never felt tippy at all. There was another stump that doesn't show in the picture- situated so that both passenger tires were on top of them at the same time. I thought I'd just walk right over them (having a doubler and all that good stuff) and voila, she just laid right over on the driver side. I couldn't believe it. i'd been in worse leaning situations many times before without incident don't know why the old girl laid over when she did. Good news is that when we flopped her back on her tires she started right up and I drove her up the hill to the top to assess the damages. One other thing you don't see is that both the hood/front fender and roofline are also laying on stumps they did some damage. I was able to continue wheeling that day and drove the old girl home with no cargo window on the driver side. It was fun and interesting but did eventually lead me to get into a 40 with a full cage welded throiugh to the frame rails. Gary S

Just a quick update, june of 2014 i picked up this 55 from Gary,
I brought it back and am in the process of finishing up the HDT auto install.
When i have time I will do up a thread of the mods and install and post a link here.
I have to compliment Gary with much of the work he and his bodyman did. very very nice work.
Cheers
