Piggy

TJ- yeah some serious hustle here. My body man is somewhat inspired to get this thing in and out of his shop- it's a cash deal and he is slow on collision work right now. Plus he owes me a few favors- he's my next door neighbor. I told him I really wanted the old girl to be done for the coal mine event that starts July 17- I believe at least from the body work end it will be ready. Stay tuned!

So, you are going with a two stage paint, right. Clear over the orange. I'm not understanding the three options. Is that just the cost of different paints or the body work also.

Thanks, Ron

Paint

I don't really understand the paint process, the three pricing options were just for the grade of clear my guy will use. He is going to spray everything with the yellowish etching primer, then he dusts it with black before sanding to find the low spots. Once that's all done he'll paint everything white (doing the jambs, too and outside of front rad support sides) then assemble, tape off the white and spray the orange. Gets clear over all that. Doing the bumpers in pewter and the frame rails in black. That's about all I know (and want to know, really!!!). Gary

Different quality grades to the paint and the clear.

Gary, I was trying to adjust my doors a little, and it seems kind of limited on how much you can move them. I hope your guy can get the door gaps the way you like them.

Door gaps and such

I never really bothered with door gaps- actually hardly ever had doors off any of my trucks and reinstalled. My orange truck never had the doors off in my time of posession. Don't remember how good the alignement was but don't ever remember thinking it was not good enough, at least for me. Remember the paint on that truck was a combination of Rustoleum brushed (on the roof) and spray bombed everywhere else.

My body guy is anal- maybe obsessive-compulsive (hope I got that right). he's the guy you want working on your vehicle. His standards are higher than mine. He can be a real PITA but his work is top notch. As an example- look at the pictures of the quarters on my truck- he told me they were a piece of crap and made me visit to see how bad they are. I think they look great, some minor rust through at the bottoms (didn't even show through the original paint).

When I asked him what I thought of the repairs that had been done by a professional while the truck was owned by Wallace he said they're not bad but he wants to bolt the fenders onto the truck to make sure the lines match the door and rocker. Figures he'll have to make some adjustment one way or another. The guy is anal, period. I thought the repaired front fenders looked really good.

I'm figuring this job is gonna cost me about $3000 including labor and material, and expect that it could go $500 either way. Having an OCD guy do your paint and body work is great as long as you can afford him.

Quick question, how did you body guy strip down to bare metal? Did he sand it all the way down with a da or did he do something with chemicals and if so what?
I am getting prepared to do some body work and have not done acting in about 20 years.
Your build looks exciting.
Thanks,
Ed

Progress report

I'm psyched! Even though the 55 won't be ready (I leave this morning) for the Coal Mine Cruiser event it is coming along. The doors, hood, tailgate, front fenders top and bottom, valance, fuel filler door and torsion bar cover are sprayed clear coated and buffed. All door openings have been sprayed. Next up is the roof (already chemically stripped, then block sanding the quarters. Rockers are also done. This little piggy is gonna look good!
I ordered a tailaget weatherstripping kit from John at Slocruisers and also sent him an extraset of rad support seals I had saved. Hopefully that package will get here early next week so the body man can get it installed for me. I am thinking I'll have the old girl back in my garage by the end of next week! Stay tuned. gary

Progress

Well, the old girl is coming home tomorrow. All the paint is finished, all the lights and stuff installed, and my tailgate weatherstrip package arrived yesterday from Slocruisers. The truck ooks awesome will get some pictures as soon as I can. Gary S

Found somthing in my garage

Yeah look what I saw today when I opened the garage door! The old girl is back, took some quick photos today they don't do the truck justice. My paint and body guy did a great job, price was very acceptable too. We're still working on the stock bumpers- they need a few dents fixed and then painted but i do have two stock bumpers for the old girl. Still have issues to address- door window and door seal weatherstripping, getting the right (oddball M12x1.5) nuts to attach the front turn signals, get the rear window working with the key switch, the usual stuff. The truck does start and drive well and all the accessories work- heater, wipers, lights, etc. I'm also working on getting a set of stock wheels presentable (have three done so far) that will get a set of 33 x 9.50 all terrains and stock hubcaps. The wheels and tires in the photos came with the 55. Check out the photos!

We did have trouble geting the front lower valance aligned. It's as good as we could make it for now.
