At this point with my body work.

I have finally turned the corner with my welding... Im pleased with how my welds are turning out.

Im finally cleaning all the weld areas to bare metal..... duh
I slowed down my wire speed....... duh
Watching exactly where my wire is on metal joint......duh....
Slowed down and not rushing......duh.
Quit forcing the weld with too much heat.... duh
Allowing my welds to cool just a bit before trying to fix "blow through"....duh
Keeping a wet rag handy while welding, to keep panel cool...... duh

Im finally beginning to feel like Im in control of my welds.

Welding Materials Used:

A. 1 tank of Ar/ CO2 mix gas....and am on my second.
B. 2 - 2lbs rolls .023 wire ... and just installed the third
C. 1 pack of cutting disc for 4in grinder
D. numerous 80 and 120 grit flapper disc for 4in grinder

In post #31 and #32 of my thread I show replacing the ambulance door hinge bushings with bronze bushings and changing out factory pin with a stainless steel 8 MM allen head bolt (high crown).

The main reason for the new bolt is to make it easy to take the doors off/on when you take the top off. I want to be able to just remove one bolt instead of having to take door hinge off/on and then realign door gaps. Causing more gaulded screws and scratched up paint.

I mounted my doors to check everything and realized these new SS bolts get in the way of mounting the hinges to the body.

Here are a few pics to explain.

This ones shows the "high crown" of the "1st" SS bolt I used(center), to the left is the new "low crown" SS bolt (left) and the factory pin to the (right)

Here is a pic of the bottom... This is another problem area.

Notice I used lower profile locknuts. This has help.

Here are some pic to help explain.

To make this work even better I used 6mm SS low crown allen screws to mount hinge on body.

Before: This was not working "High Crown"

Here is the "low crown" allen head and low profile nut. Lots better!!

Ok next week will be another run at trying to finish all the welding on my rig.

Mean while I checking on getting my paint.

621 Rustic Green , body color. PPG carries this and will have no problem getting it

031 Cygnus White, top and grill. PPG carries this and no problem getting it.

I bought 416 rattlecan and clear coat rattlecan, from automotivetouchup.com.

416 wasn't listed, so I called them, they put me on hold for five minutes, they came back and said, "it's a good Toyota code. We can definitely match it".

It was a perfect match.

I realize you probably don't want rattlecan, but maybe they can provide what you want.

You're doing great work Doug!!

Question: Did you ever consider PlastiDipping the whole rig and spraying it? :hmm:

@adistler1 .... Yeah, it all seems a judgement call.

Figure out how to mark you panel to cut out......Cut it all out..... drill out all spot welds at seams.... repair rusty you are going to weld to......get it all to fit back.......+/- 4 linear feet of welding....

Probably just one day! Instead of 20 hr :banana::banana: job.

But, look at the mad skills you've developed!!

I Plastidipped my truck. Don't do it! It's a nightmare to remove.

I have seen guys here paint their own rigs and have wanted to do it myself...

I mean heck, I did my own panel replacement... don't misunderstand ... I'm not bragging one bit... I am just stating, with the help of all of y'all across the whole wide world has helped motivate and convince me that even I could accomplish this monumental feat.

With that.... Thank all of you who post up what you do to your rigs!! It has help me tremendously!!

Now I would like to thank the following guys who painted their own rig in their garage. I know there are more.... but these are the guys that I read their threads and gave me motivation to do this myself. @rkymtnflyfisher, @MScruiser , @JohnnyC, @TractorDoc .....

I will edit this as I remember more guys!!

Anyway as I'm having a few Dr. Dinky's Medicated Eye Wash :beer::beer:while I am sitting here in the garage looking at my new purchase....

Practice on something before you shoot ypur 40. Use a quality paint gun.

It sucked painting mine, I hope to never do that again.
