Few different options out there, believe that Second Skin has come up with a roof insulator, there is always jute or MLV panels that you can throw up. Really up to you and your pocket book.

Good call on the MLV, just had a look at that and it lead me to looking at high density foam too. Hopefully cheaper and more available locally than all these specialty stereo equipment products.

Ha! you are right, it's like watching a rerun for me. It always seems so easy to just pull stuff apart. At least I am heading the other way now, that's always an important high (or low?) point to realize and celebrate. I do have to congratulate myself of not touching any mechanical yet, although i am accumulating parts for axle rebuilds, radiator, gaskets etc. Goal is to pull the body back together before I touch anything else.....never mind more room in the garage!

Hey, thanks for the link! I have not seen this one yet. I am just talking to Kevin over email as I've ordered some window welt from him. Great guy to deal with as most of you know. I'm trying to source locally as shipping anything to Canada is a pain and expensive so I'm heading to "The Foam Shop" so see what they have. They list a high density foam for sound deadening that I can likely glue to the headliner. I'll take some pics of the process when I do it and if it comes out useful I can post. I am also adding a second dome light (OEM) so we'll see how it works out.

The plan for the color is stock blue/gray (156 or 153...can't remember at the moment). This is really where the saga began thou. I tried to match just the roof and hood and noticed that every panel had faded to a different color (top of fenders was brownish, doors were flatter gray and the inside of the truck was this nice new bluish gray). I got some paint mixed through PPG to the original book spec of the truck color brought it home and it was not even close to the original inside (like under carpet) color. Interestingly, it matched the faded fender color pretty well. I brought in a piece from the rear tailgate and we matched as best we could to the interior color. I am nervously waiting how it turns out thou....we added a lot of blue to the original formula. Here is a picture of the paint somewhere in the middle of the mixing process.

Things are moving along slowly, but it's starting to look like a truck again. Got the rear doors installed and roof finally finished by the painter. New door hinges on the front going on next. While the truck is in the paint shop, I picked up some seat heater pads and am rebuilding my front seats (was able to score some nice covers especially on the driver's bottom).

Happy New Year everyone, can't wait to get this thing back.

Looks great!! I'm sure that would have no problem for a collectors plate.. Color is similar to the sedan i have silver/bluish color.
How much did it cost you to repaint the whole body? Looking forward to the finished Fj62 :)
 
I spent a ton of time on prep and even thou I've painted several cars before I've decided to farm out the spray to a local guy. I'm in the middle of a house renovation so space is just at a huge premium in my garage and with winter rains I was going nuts having the truck sit and have to work around it all the time.....I guess with age comes experience to tell yourself that progress is more important than doing it all yourself! So far very happy with the communication and general approach of local painter, he does one/two jobs at a time and is very detail oriented. I have several classics and am thinking about getting him to paint my Westfalia as well - for anyone in Vancouver BC pm me and I can put you in touch if you'd like. Cost is never cheap (about $4K - highly dependent on condition of the truck etc. and supplies on top

) but having poured countless hours in my other restos I know the work involved and it's fair. Paint is comprised of primer etcher (on bare metal), sealer on seams and gutter, primer (high build), bunch of relentless sanding and leveling in between, base coat (color) and clear. I mixed the color several times to match the right hue and clear is a high quality finish. I will not wet sand or anything, just wax and let the paint cure very well over time. Latest photos from today, we are nearing the end....
 
That appears to be an excellent paint job.
 
In the light of day. I think it came out awesome. Will cut and polish after it's cured in about a month (i'm paranoid). Will be slowly assembling this back over the coming weeks starting with the headliner and windshield. This concludes the paint portion of this program and I'm glad to have this part behind.

Team - I've got a question I can't seem to find the answer/opinion to. I am in the process of gathering up FatMat or Dynamat to install before I start putting the interior back together. I also have all my rustproofing ready to go but want to install the mats first as things will get messy after the spray in stuff.

Question is this: If I were to do the floor in the mat, do you recommend putting down the felt material down again under the carpet? Would you glue it down a bit? My thinking is that I would FatMat/Dynamat the floor, spray adhesive lightly and install the felt? would seem like the carpet would "slide" around without it. Thoughts?

Also, on the roof, would you do DynaMat/Fatmat and that's that? I don't like how the original felt sagged down.

I'm only doing this since I have everything out. Don't really care at this point which product I use, I feel most will be the same....found some FatMat on craigslist for $200 for 50 sq. ft so I'll start with that.

Started with the FatMat. It's not the funnest job, I'd rather be doing axles but at least it's a step closer to getting the headliner in. Always comes apart so easy, but resto jobs always take 10 times longer! For some reason, I can't post pictures anymore - is there a secret handshake or something?
 
g-man, too late! there is a lot of "I think it will come off" talk out there, but I have seen many use it including a place that does custom Sprinters without issues and can't find anyone really having a problem, so not too worried. I was thinking of the same thing initially (rubber or closed cell foam) but when I stuck the first one I don't "feel" like it's coming off. I have it in long thin pieces so think it reduces the chances of the "weight" pulling it down.

The stuff is basically roofing tar so gets way stickier in the heat.
