Love reading what is going on. I have a question of ignorance, shocker, as I will be hopefully diving into mine this year....Went to grab the new bolts Georg shipped to Galen and what do you know, he shipped him the correct 4wd shift rod. Did not have a punch small enough to knock out the spring pin so I cut the 90 off of an Allen wrench. Also replaced the factory 5 gear spacer gasket. Always surprises me how nasty that thing gets from storage etc. Will install front half tomorrow and hopefully stabbing her in

Hey Brian, this is a great question and one I have never noticed. But looking at the pic you’re spot on. Since the case is now on there’s no way to review this in person. Copying @orangefj45 Georg as I bet he can provide an answer as to why these two teeth are missing.Love reading what is going on. On the picture of the transmission of this post (before the split case is being added - second to last picture), the lower gears, it looks to me like two teeth are missing off the top gear (at 11 and 5) - It could be shadow etc. If not, is it by design? Just trying to understand what bits look like when they come off/on.
Cheers.
Ha…that was my first attempt but the darn drill bit was not strong enough and sent shrapnel as I struck it with the hammer. The Allen wrench handled it like a champ.I had the same problem looking for a punch to drive out that roll pin. I used the back half of a drill bit I cut off

You’re looking at the 5th gear hub, not the gear itself. The gear has “all its teeth”. The hub is missing two teeth to align properly with the 5th gear synchro ring.Hey Brian, this is a great question and one I have never noticed. But looking at the pic you’re spot on. This picture also clearly shows why we always replace the gaskets on the rear extension housing. They are always oil soaked and will cause a small leak if not replaced ( make sure you clean the surface properly before installing the new gasket ).

Looks great!“Good Enough”. Scratch and shoot was the plan. Had to hit it with a quart of color. Did not even take out the handful or more hail dents that USAA paid me for in 2016. Will let her cure for a month or so and wet sand the garbage out of the hood. Flattening the tires helped the process.
