What size is the factory sub in an 80

For the time being you could just pull the sub so it won't be rattling or anything. I might be available Sunday if you want to swing by to Weaverville. It is supposed to be cold and possibly snow but I have a garage.

Lots of people install a new head unit, bypass the factory amp, replace the 4 door speakers, ignore their rotted out sub and are quite happy.

I'm unhappy with my setup (all aftermarket, no sub) because the storage system I put in place of the second row covers up the rear door speakers and pretty much leaves me with the front doors only. Maybe the headliner speakers, too...I've never checked. But I don't care enough to do anything about it. Sound quality from an iPod sucks anyway. As does most music (have I ever said that before???). Besides, my $20 Baofeng gets FM and the center console makes a nice natural amplifier for it!

When I install a new stereo in an 80 I usually disconnect the Sub. I really think it's pointless. You can still do preouts from your stereo to the factory amp but I think the newer headunit amps are better than the 1990's technology. I think all 80's need a sub. Even a 6" one concealed behind the factory location in a correct tuned box. But you need a good amp to power it. I can't stand not having bass.

Pulled the rear panel off the white 97 for the first time today, and saw my sub. the foam ring was laying in the bottom of the quarter panel. PO had aftermarket head unit and door speakers installed, as well as sub and amp (his kid kept the sub and amp).

I will be pulling mine off for the first time on Sunday I have never had a reason to pull it off before now so I am interested to see whats there seems like everytime I pull a panel off I find some jerry rigged wiring going to an add on the po installed prior to my ownership in 2008

It worked perfectly, really don't need the built in tweeter but with the factory crossover it does nothing. It's a really easy fit as well. I already gave the extra one away, sorry about that.

I gotta be honest, I can’t remember. Sorry about that. Knowing myself I probably bypassed it if I had to guess. I will say the speakers I put in to replace the old door speakers still sound fantastic and I know they are only running off the Pioneer head unit I put in, no amp at all.

So you're not using the factory amp at all?

You sure about that? Surprising that the sub would be working at all - the headliner speakers - are they running too?

James you seem to know what you’re taking about. Sub blew. Bought a cheap 6.5” sub to fit. Fits great. Zero sound. I just rigged the factor harness. Could it be the little amp at the sub?

Thanks for the update. Ya I have 4 pioneers running and I think I may have one reversed as the whole thing sounds very treble(ee). I want to get that little sub working first to see if it is just that.
