Factory sub finally blew and I am just looking for an inexpensive drop in replacement can anyone tell me the size and any recommendations to do so. I am not a sound guy just need something that doesnt crackle and still makes sound. Not looking for a new mount or box or anything removable I already have enough crap in the back I am constantly moving around.

Not sure if its the same as a 95-97 in back pass corner? If it is @fj40z found a drop in speaker ..... not necessarily woofer but quick and easy fix. He has one more as an extra i believe. Here it is with some specs.

Any 6.5" speaker should fit and most will sound terrible unless you do some modifications to the mounting.

I'm curious if that speaker in Steve's truck is actually giving off any treble or if it's just bass? Not sure if the factory sub has a passive crossover on the back of it or if the factory amp has a crossover built in.

That said, a cheap 6.5" sub like this one would be a quick way to get the rattle that you're hearing from the blown sub fixed:

"Lanzar MAXP64 6.5" 600 Watt Subwoofer" from www.parts-express.com!

The other option is to remove the factory sub and recone it. It's really quite easy to do.

Interesting @fj40z do you have any feedback on this if so want to get rid of the extra?

It worked perfectly, really don't need the built in tweeter but with the factory crossover it does nothing. It's a really easy fit as well. I already gave the extra one away, sorry about that.

No problems I found something with comparable specs in the woofer category for 12 bucks will give it a shot didn't know I could do that I am not a big audio guy.

"TC-6028 6-1/2" Treated Paper Cone Woofer with Foam Surround 8 Ohm" from www.parts-express.com!

That one, huh?

It's a home speaker, rather than a car speaker - but at 8 ohms it's a better choice than most car speakers (4 ohms) since I"m fairly certain the factory sub is 10 ohms or some other weird thing...

Do yourself a favor, buy some dynamat (or fatmat or thermo-king duct insulation) and use it to line the space behind and around the sub. This will improve the sound a bit and it's pretty cheap.

Nope went with this Amazon.com: Pyle PLG64 6.5-Inch 300-Watt Mid-Bass Woofer: Car Electronics will be picking up some dynamat as well will do that while I have that off eventually plan on doing the whole vehicle.

Did you already order it? I have a 6.5" that looks just like that (same brand) that I am not using. It was part of a component set. I put the other one where my sub goes and I can't hear it.....but there is a TON of open air back there...so if I could enclose it somehow it would sound better. Your sub is up front though I think?

Cancel your order and I will trade you the speaker for the light. ;-)

Sounds good I am cancelling now. My sub is in the back like yours

LX450 had it in the center console

@jamesurq .... the OEM sub had 10 Ohms of impedance?

I believe so. The little head liner speakers are 10 ohms as well. Didn't keep it when I removed it - but when I did I wasn't surprised.

Not that it really matters that much - but certainly I would be happier with an 8 ohm speaker with very high sensitivity (90+) since the factory amp is probably very low power - a 4 ohm speaker with lower sensitivity will be quiet... and will likely make the factory amp run hot.

This is all chinese to me if I am running off of the headunit am I at risk of something burning? I have a Kenwood DNX5160 I have had a few years now with no issue with the factory amp being bypasses by the previous owner.

So you're not using the factory amp at all?

You sure about that? Surprising that the sub would be working at all - the headliner speakers - are they running too?

I don't have headliner speakers my 80 is a European Spec so I have 2 in the dash 2 in the middle row and a sub previous owner wired in pioneer speakers everywhere but the rear it appears that the factory amp is bypassed behind the glove box I could be wrong I thought that most double din units now have a small internal amp

Ahh....

I see. It may be that the sub you have is a different spec. But yes you're right most head units will have built in amplification. Generally speaking, it's set up to power 4 - 4 ohm speakers. Would be interested in seeing how your sub is wired in.... There's a few ways you could do it, but none will have any type of crossover unless it's still using the factory amp.

IE: a full range speaker would be just fine in there.

Personally, I'd skip it completely - run the 4 pioneers alone on the headunit and get a real sub with a seperate amp.

I will take pics this weekend when i get cruiser time from the wife and see if I can help decipher this. I do know that the sub is blown drove 2 hrs the airport in Charlotte last week then returned and it was annoying as all could be on the songs that have a higher level of base. So had to be selective on the playlist.
