new boots and a bit of bling for the old girl ... steelies/hubcaps and 33" bfg t/a's ... rattle canned the fronts of the wheels with Tremclad Machine Grey and the backs gloss black which is apparently the way they came on the truck from the factory (per a thread on Mud) ... a bit of a pita, but they turned out pretty good, not perfect, but pretty good ... an after and before shot ...

@winnie I love your sand dune 40! Wishing I had one, I'm on the look out for one preferably a BJ40 or 42.

Installed my new steelies, tires and hubcaps what a difference it makes.

Tires - Good Year Duratracs 31x10.5x15, steelies OEM Toyota, hubcaps OEM Toyota.

I'll be removing the rear flairs as I no longer need them, that was a PO add-on, however, the mud flaps stay since they are my install.

They look great! What paint did you use for the housing?

I was told only difference between 76 -80 and 80+ was the wiring. Is that correct?

I didn't paint it. Just plenty of rub with glossy Armor All. If I were to paint it I would use the plastic paint that @SSCR used.

The 76-77 lights have two leads. The ones after that have three leads.

Got a new xfer case shift knob & a new wind screen screw hinge kit installed. Of course as with many 40 projects it'll only take a few minutes to do this and it takes hours. I guess two out of sixteen screws wasn't all that bad. A little easy out action and everything was well

Still beating up this 283 trying to determine if I should do a quick reseal/repair while it's out, and drop it back in, or if it is time to ditch it. Performed compression and Leak-down tests tonight. Compression test was STELLAR...Leakdown, not so much...

LEAKAGE TEST - 90PSI added to cylinder
Cylinder 1: 82 PSI - 9%
Cylinder 8: 78 PSI - 13%
Cylinder 4: 77 PSI - 14%
Cylinder 3: 78 PSI - 13%
Cylinder 6: 74 PSI - 18%
Cylinder 5: 68 PSI - 23%
Cylinder 7: 73 PSI - 19%
Cylinder 2: 76 PSI - 15%

COMPRESSION TEST
Cylinder 1: 145 PSI
Cylinder 8: 150 PSI
Cylinder 4: 150 PSI
Cylinder 3: 147 PSI
Cylinder 6: 143 PSI
Cylinder 5: 147 PSI
Cylinder 7: 139 PSI
Cylinder 2: 145 PSI

Thoughts/opinions welcome!

For what it's worth, the engine doesn't smoke at idle, and doesn't seem low on power, but I DO get a touch of blue smoke when revving, sitting still...

From my reading, it seems like anything between 10 and 25% is considered marginal, but not "dead." Interested to hear opinions from the collective.

Could you tell where the air was coming out ?

Lengthened my drive shafts, and moved my 40 under it's own power for the first time in over 5 years. crappy flip phone pics attached.

I have a noisy rear diff and it was worrying me so I drained the oil last night and removed the rear cover this morning. With the 40 jacked up I gave the passenger wheel ( left side in my case ) a spin and the clicking was constant. I should mention I can't easily turn the drivers side rear wheel as the brakes stick on that side which is what led me to to this new discovery. Anyway, long story short it turns out I have some kind of ezy locker which I guess is good that nothing is broken but sounds hideous. Do they really click all the time?

I have aussie lockers front and rear in my 40. I don't think they click all the time, well if they do I cant hear it over the hum of my swampers. When I installed them years ago I think in the info that came with them it said they might click when going around corners or something. I dunno they work well though. :)

Could you tell where the air was coming out ?

Air was entirely past the rings and out the valve breather/dipstick tube. Nothing from the valves, carb, or coolant.

Didi you listen in the exhaust also?

Sounds like it is time for new rings. I'm surprised your compression numbers were as high as they were. Also wonder if your ring gaps are not staggered.

Nothing out of the carb or the exhaust, or in the coolant - as far as I could tell everything was past the rings.

I should also note that the leakage test was done cold, with all cylinders at TDC. So actually operating leakage might not be quite so bad due to expansion.

Yeah, the compression/leakage numbers are confusing. All compression numbers were taken after 5 cranks - didn't take much to get them up there.
