Got stuck and got out (the last pic is out)... And understood why power steering is a good thing after about 40 times going lock to lock just to get an inch further. The wheel would barely turn stuck in the rut I was in! It's winter but I was sweating like a pig stripped down to my t-shirt- windows open.

I love my winch but it seems there is never anchor to pull to when I need it!

Look into a land anchor. I've never seen one, but the pics Ive seen make me think something like that may have been useful in this situation.

Don

I haven't played with it enough to know if it is viable yet, but I cut up and welded some steel rod to make a spike for the ground to winch against. One suggestion was to weld some additional sheet metal for sword like wings, but that would make it more difficult to remove as well.

This video from Theiss shows it in use, kinda...

It's actually at about 10:30 in part 2:

Installed a small ARB compressor and an in-cab outlet so I won´t have to open the hood for air....

changed the tires and wheels from OEM chrome with 33x9.5 AT's to OEM gray/hubcap wheels with BFG 33x10.5's........what a difference in looks and driving......I was WRONG, 33x10.5's work just fine on a 5.5" wheel ;)

I thought the wagons were 6".

I'm thinking about making an anchor. I think pulling it put will be a chore no matter what. I was thinking to have an attachment for the hi-lift to pull it up with. Now that I've said that I figure I could just sharpen the end of the hi-lft and hammer that into the ground and use it to pull itself out when I'm done.

You don't want to hammer it in, you want to dig a trench and bury it. It doesn't have to be too deep, but it has to be pretty far away so you're pulling it sideways and not upwards. You can do it with a suitably big rock or log too.

Made a pinion flange isolation tool so I can swap out leaking pinion seals and set preload. Found some rubber for my door limiters so my doors dont impact my mirrors any more. Installed a generic window crank knob so I can roll my window up and down.

Linex-ed the rollbar, trans hump, and a bunch of parts. Removed front fenders, hood, and prepped my 40 for Linex. It's going all around..... In blue.

It was a big week

Olde North State Cruisers Xmas Party/Wheeling/Camping Trip.

Blew a front axle seal, used a tree to "customize" my front bumper, filled the interior with magic Uwharrie Forest dust, enjoyed my recently extended seat travel. Used a new $20 windshield mount phone caddy to take some respectable video.

Scored a great deal and installed new tires and wheels. I hope my forearms don't go back to their pre-33x12.50 size. The new 33x10.50 KM2's are a good bit easier on the manual steering front.

Got stuck cutting firewood

I took a 1/2 day from work today to cut wood. I got crossed up in the muck in OldRacerGuy's woods with a full trailer. After unloading the whole trailer i was still unable to drive out and had to have my wife and her 80 rescue me.

Although it was her first time driving her truck in the woods, she operated the 4wd, lockers and pulling flawlessly! But she pulled my left front tire into a tree and over-arched the back half of my left front spring and mashed the left front fender, bent the shock shaft and turn signal:doh:

I was proud of her though and thanked her for helping me make up my mind about a SOA or links. Links win.

could have been a lot worse...

could have been a lot worse...

You could have had your girlfriend try to pull you out with her JEEP and you both got stuck in the mud because her Jeep is nothing but junk. Then you would have had to call your wife to get her 80 to get both of you out of the mud, which would have taken a lot of explaining and apologizing not to mention what your Christmas present bill would have been.

I think it is amazing that your wife came down with her truck - pulled your 40 out, probably gave you a big hug and a kiss because she is so cool and she will never again mention to you that your tough 40 got stuck again because she understands how much it means to you.

I say that you should take you wife out for a really nice dinner and detail her 80. She sounds like a keeper and besides, you can always buy a new fender and blinker, but wives that that (mine included) who let us have our "Toys" and play in the mud do not come around often. I would even send you a few bucks toward a new set of blinkers just for the great story.

Merry Christmas!

Teeth to the wind,
Sno Dawg

Loaded mine up and took it a friends shop to get the P/s installed, wiring harness hooked up, and get it running.

After it was out I cleaned and organized my shop.

installed new BTB Products 21 gallon fuel tank

As a part of my ongoing quest to get the '72 FJ40 ready for Tahoe... we installed a new BTB Products 21 gallon fuel tank. The kit comes complete with filler neck. We purchased a sender and installed it in the tank, which required some work (drilling into the tank, getting all the cuttings out of the tank, etc).

Now it is plumbed and the filler neck is being mounted in the rear passenger side of the FJ. We used an Omix-Ada 17742.02 Fuel Filler Neck assembly and painted it the same color as the body. More pics when we are complete.
