Wondering, since I am not familiar with the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum…did you find your year FJ40 and was it a representative sample of “correct stock” ? Are the vehicles on display unmodified versions?
They have a wide range of completely stock unmodified, to heavily modified LCs in the collection. They also have strange ones like Land Cruiser mining trucks, fire trucks and ambulances. They have some of the first Land cruisers imported to the US in the 1950’s, to a 2025 Land Cruiser, with everything and every series in between…It’s a very impressive collection.

Wasn't happy with the way the Pig was running, just sounded a little rough at higher (3K) RPM. Couldn't tune it out. So I swapped distributors. Took out the '76ish non-ca vac advance with Pertronix and put back the 60 series bigcap. Fixed everything. I h8 the hold-down bolt for the bigcap, I can even reach it through the fenderwell and it's still a real PIA to get started.
I don't know if there was something wrong with the old dizzy or if the bigcap is just that much better.

I’m sure you know, that all of the small-cap distributors rotate in bronze bushings, while the big-cap dizzys rotate in ball bearings (hence the size difference). It makes sense that there would be much less wear and eventual slop in the shaft and cam with the big-cap bearings.

Sure, there's that. I did check the shaft play of the small cap, very slight. Plus, Pertronix is supposed to be able to overlook that.

Same irritation with the hold down bolt….. found this on eBay - delivered today!

I’m thinking it will still be a PITA! 🤣

Water pump is off and sent off to get rebuilt.

For the freeze plug behind the water pump. I don’t believe it is leaking (haven’t drained the block and no seepage so far from this freeze plug). Should I just put Toyota FIPG over it so it will match up with the FIPG when I put the water pump back on??

Personally, I would clean that that area and that plug so I could keep an eye on it and watch for rust. Does the waterpump cover any of that plug?

Great question. I just looked through all the pics I took and I think it might not cover it. I’ll clean it all up while the pump is getting rebuilt and see if I see any leaks in the meantime. Then mock it up and if the water pump doesn’t cover it I’ll just monitor…and put some FIPG on it for good measure.

The block is full of coolant right now and no leaks on that freeze plug. Not sure how much pressure is put on those when the vehicle is running…if that could increase the chance of a leak.

Probably 12 to 15 psi. It might be printed on the rad cap.

Next question. Water pump outlet hose going to the heater is 24mm ID. Closest I can find is 25mm ID. Send it and just clamp super tight? I basically have to go from the water pump to 5/8” ID so I’ll need a coupler (the old one is super homemade and rusted) to go from 1” ID (25mm) to 5/8” ID (16mm).

So…25mm ID and clamp??? Only about 5” of hose.

I'd rather stretch a 3/4" hose. Home Despot has a good selection of brass fitting, hose barbs, adapter bushing to change size etc.
You can solder the brass fittings for never leak insurance.
Thanks. I’ll take the housing with me and make sure I can stretch that on there.

I bought the wrong thermostat gasket for my early FJ…but luckily found one new in a bag in a box of parts. It is from SOR…probably from the 90s, but never used or opened.

0.5 mm all the way around? That's .020" Not enough gap to even notice for me. Just clamp it with a decent hose clamp.

You have the o-ring for the top too, right?

That goes on the top of the thermostat? Yes I do have that. Thanks for checking…I had forgotten I needed it, but realized I had ordered it when I ordered everything a few months ago…haha.

I remembered that I had an old water pump on a shelf in the garage so I put the caliper on it and it measures 24.7mm O.D. at the opening.
Use the 25mm I.D. hose. ;)View attachment 3930845
The pipe on the thermostat housing isn’t that large in diameter (due to the flare on the end of that water pump pipe) and mine goes to the heater and not as a ‘bypass’ scenario. Still hoping a similar size hose will be good. Running the thermostat housing by the auto store today to try some different sizes.
