@Buffchief Vac will tell a story for sure. Also, maybe a tooth off on the distributer? shouldn't have to turn it that far?

Just trying to figure out the sequence of events for all this. I feel like I'm out of order and screwing up the carb idle or timing advance/retard.

I would start a thread explaining what the issue is and what you did so far... this will definitely get lost in this thread

pics help alot as well

Got my Pto winch mounted. Just have to install the drive shaft and Pto in cab lever.

Here's a video I made a few minutes ago with the vacuum gauge hooked up and after adjusting the carb a bit. I don't know the rpms but has it high enough to keep it running without the choke. Compression test was all between 149.5 and 151.5. Distro is about in the middle

Grab yourself a timing light that does advance and rpm’s. They’re like $80 (for now) for a good one.

Indispensable bit of kit for tuning.

Find OTRAMM’s lean drop vid. Do that.

Edit: here you go…

Compression check
Valve adjustment
Timing adjustment
Carburation.
That's the order of operations.
Got. I've done everything in that order but have gone back and forth between timing and carb. If the timing BB isn't showing I adjust the carb idle lower and that throws everything out of wack with the visibility of the BB, goes back to the left.
I just pulled my distributor with the BB on the market and fwd cylinder full up. Distrb arm is pointing to #4. Looking at the manual it looks like it should be pointed more towards left side of the side cover top center bolt? Photo attached from book

Back to the store.....💲💲💲
Save your money.
If the BB is in the window. Lower the idle using the idle screw until you aren't drawing fuel through the venturi.
You'll know because you'll have the ability to run in the mixture screw and starve out the engine.
Get it off the venturi and drawing fuel through the idle circuit at idle...

The timing light with advance and rpm’s has been a valuable tool in keeping my two LC’s tuned up.
I'm cosigning what @RevISK said - I did valve lash last week, check plug/gap etc, checked/set timing, then to lean-drop like the video he linked to earlier with the timing light and vacuum gage - running much better and frankly tools I carry when I am going somewhere long distance as I find my elevation changing and a bump for advance/quick lean drop to hone in for the area invaluable. The $$ for a good timing light is worth it IMO as checking, setting and adjusting the carb/timing is never a one and done.

when I started out with all this, I was questioned "Is the carb the problem or the symptom?" which is why starting with valves, spark, and moving to the carb last is my process and what others say too.

Check the cut off solenoid on the carb. The engine fuse needs to be 15 amp. Also check that the hot wire to the distributor is tight. Make sure the points(if you have them) are adjusted for gap. Those things as well as 3 1/2 turns out on the mixture solved my idle problem. Have you checked the vacuum?
The vacuum is good at times but when I'm adjusting the carb to lowered the idle to keep the timing ball in the window the vacuum drops.
There seems to be a fine line !!

I'm all for owning a timing light.
As a professional mechanic of 20 years I've never had use for any of the extra features on expensive timing lights.

A light that flashes when the plug sparks is all you need on these old pigs.
Sounds like he's got a timing light, if he's got the bb in the window, and if the bb is in the window, that's close enough to set the carb up.
If he doesn't have a timing light, he should probably borrow or buy one.
I hesitate to recommend buying one because they're about obsolete.
You're not going to use it besides on your landcruiser and any other classic cars you may have, so buying a nice expensive one is probably a waste of money.
